At what age do people "officially" become seniors?

The county I live in recognizes senior citizens at age 55 (at least in regard to community housing). I received an AARP application when I turned 55. Restaurants that give discounts to seniors have a minimum age at 55 to qualify. You can get Social Security at age 62. I seems that most of society has arbitrarily set the age at 65.

Same with when you are considered an adult for various purposes, 17, 18, 21, 26.

In our city we have subisdized housing for seniors that require you to be 55, 60, 62, or 65 depending on which government agency is involved and what if any disabilities a person has.

I considered myself a senior when I got my first Social Security check at age 62!!!

I live in PA, and we really don't have an age where you "have" to retire. I know of some nurses, who have worked into her 80s. And, nope, she's not a blithering dope. I'm looking at a pic of her in Antarctica. She's been to all 7 continents.

I noticed some of you mentioned senior housing. In my county, I'm 70, and if I put in for housing; I'd be put on a list. I probably wouldn't live long enough to get a place.

55 would be considered the normal age to be classified as a senior but to be a pensioner in Australia the age has been risen to 65 and our government wants to increase it again to 67 or may even have done so. But which in my view i believe this to be too old as many people at that age tend to have health issues and don't really get to enjoy life as healthy as they would have.

I didn't know any state had a mandatory retirement age, but I know many jobs do (airline pilots, for example).

Here where I live, the same is true for senior or disablity housing -- the list is hopelessly long. They aren't even taking applications anymore, and haven't for at least two years.

Golden Buckeye Card in Ohio gives discounts starting at 60.
Some local theaters give senior prices at 60 as well.
The local YMCA gives membership discounts but not until 65.
It's all across the board

I'm not a senior - I'm fighting it. (I'm 78)
I know its a losing battle, but I'd rather fight it than give in.
So far, I'm doing everything I did 30 years ago, but I know I'm "treading water"
Still, I'm fighting it.

I think you can get SS in Ohio when you are age 60. Or is it 62? You can get AARP at 50. Some housing you have to be 55 and some you have to be 62 to be a senior there. But according to this forum we are seniors at 50, no? :)

I can still do everything I used to do and still have just as much energy starting out each day...I just can't do everything for as long as I used to and run out of energy a whole lot sooner than I used to!

We get to call ourselves seniors when we start getting discounts for no other reason than that we've hung on long enough to claim them:)

When you go somewhere that offers senior discounts and they give it to you without asking if you are truly of age to get it?
When you are in 12th grade in high school?
When you are no longer carded when you order a drink?
Or maybe just when you feel like you are a senior?
There is no official age, so it is pretty much up to the individual and just because people refer to you as a senior, does not mean you have to be one.
