Audio book narrators

Every once in awhile, I listen to a book on my Kindle. mostly to give my eyes a rest. After listening to a few I was intrigued by the way many of the narrators changed their voice for several characters in the book. Even from male to female. I looked this up online and found this:
Typically, audiobook narrators are paid an hourly rate based upon the "finished hour” of the book being narrated.

Hourly rates for new narrators paid by medium- to large-sized publishers range from about $100 to $350 per finished hour - both in studio and at home.

For simplicity sake, we’ll use $100 per finished hour and the average book length of 10 hours.

Therefore, a finished book that is 10.0 hours long will get the narrator paid $1,000.

Quite interesting and hard work I thought. Do you enjoy listening to books?

I subscribed to Audible for awhile and did get a few books. I found that I do enjoy listening to non fiction books but didn't enjoy fictional books as much and part of it was because of the narration. I did enjoy the Dark Tower series because of the narrator. Apparently he is considered a star in the audio book world !

I've belonged to Audible a long time. Some of the readers are amazing as they can do male/female and different accents. I won't get a book until I hear the sample of the reader as a good book can be ruined by a bad reader.
