Being prepared for winter travel.

We don't have as far to go, as we've already been
Triple A has warned that anyone traveling in Icy conditions should take a shovel, blankets, sleeping bag, extra clothing... especially scarf, wool hat and gloves, 24 hour supply of food and drink, de-icer, rock salt, flashlight w/ spare battery, gas can, first aid kit, and jumper cables in case they suddenly need them.

I have to admit, I felt a bit foolish carting all this on the Bus. ;)

We get a lot of snow and ice here... more bona fide blizzards than in the past. We only have de-icer, flashlight, and jumper cables in the car... if it would be so bad that we may need food, sleeping bag, or extra clothing, we wouldn't be out on the roads, I'm pretty sure.

As a long time skier often traveling in the snowy Sierra Nevada, my vehicle has a lot of stuff beyond those listed so if necessary could survive a few days if stuck road side in storms. Includes a heavy -5F degree goose down sleeping bag.

No, I don't have any of that except: a flashlight on my phone, bandaid in the glove. If my car broke down I would call CAA (I am a member).

Good to plan for however much driving you expect to do. I might be in a ditch or at the side of the road, within the town limits, waiting for a tow truck or good Samaritan. So blankets to keep me warm for one hour in minus 40 degree weather are probably all I need.

Now that I have a Japanese car, the jumper cables are mostly so I can help someone else.
