I just sat down to post that story here. I notice it's a Russian ship; not content with breaking up the ice in the Arctic, they came to knock ours around too. The Ruskies have ice-breaking cruise ships that ply the Arctic waters, helping to break up the ice and contributing - in part - to the reduction in Arctic ice. Once unnaturally broken up, winds and current can shift the ice more easily.

Russian ship still stuck tight and the Chinese icebreaker unable to break thru ..... the mid-Summer ice, because it's "too thick". Hmmmmm .....

Well, the Russian bear and the Chinese Snow Dragon can't cut it, let's see if the Aurora Australis can be the Mouse that roared eh?
A French vessel had a glance at it too but shrugged and gave up, ...nah don't go there.

It may be my coming from a mining family but I have to wonder why they didn't just drill a few holes and lay a line of charges along the route?
That would take a bit of the tension and fight out of it surely? Strange that Russians and Chinese didn't think of blowing things up as a solution.
Maybe they should have sent in a demolition team, or the CSG frackers!??

You're very late with that resolution DB, that was one I've kept from the time the first swimming polar bear ad hit the airwaves.

My abiding resolution has always (well, nearly always) been: Don't Believe Everything You Are Told. (DBEYAT).

Rider: ... especially if you hear it from a politician, most of the media, religious fundamentalists, teenagers, talk show hosts, and a large number of scientific researchers.

Jill, I hear that Aurora Australis has about six inches more ice-breaking capacity than the Chinese boat; the ice is reported as three (3) meters thick. Anyway, it's the Southern polar melt season and Mother Nature will probably sort out the problem because sea ice will disappear from now till about March.
 
Right again DB, "cracks are reported in the ice around stranded Russian ship" just galloped across the news banner. It's summer for gawd's sake, what's the panic?
