In no particular order:

Falcone’s Pizza - Irvington, NJ, 1960s

Jersey tomatoes - 1960s, 1970s (don’t think I really had one as good since)

Creme Brulee (never met a Creme Brulee I did not like)

Filet Mignon. Also, this steak house that my ex took me to in Northern NJ. Owned by a guy who used to be at Sparks? One of the big NYC steakhouses.

Ripe Mango - is there anything better than a good ripe mango?

Good piece of watermelon. Also cantaloupe and honeydew for that matter.

The Grandmas. Both grandmother’s were amazing cooks. Some of the stuff they made was simply some of the best food I had anywhere

This little fish shack down at the Jersey shore. Been there since the 1930s. Best fresh fish and they cook some too, for lunches. Used to be owned by people connected to the old Fulton Street Fish Market in NYC.

Cheese of All Nations, Chamber St, NYC, 1970s

Wait a minute! Aren't you the one who's always ragging on N.J.?? :D See we are good for something. One of the best tomatoes I've ever had was a Jersey tomato. Others are cherry tomatoes in Costco's chicken Caesar salad. I don't know where those tomatoes come from but damn..they are so good.

Definitely my mother made some of my best meals. She was a great cook. Also my (half) sister...not my mother's child, is a great cook who used to have Sunday dinners all the time. Her meals were like Thanksgiving every Sunday. My sister's daughter makes the best macaroni and cheese I've ever had.

I'm not a salmon person but I had salmon with some kind of creme sauce at a N.J. banquet house a couple of decades ago. Everyone walked out of that event talking about that salmon. They ruined it for everyone else.

Best apple pie, besides my mother's...Costco's! Best cakes...my mother's yellow cake with chocolate icing and orange cake, both from scratch. I miss being able to have them.

Best fish besides the salmon...my niece's husband made some fresh caught perch or bass (can't remember which) for Thanksgiving one year. It was so good that I didn't even deal with the turkey. But speaking of turkey, I'm usually not a turkey fan either but best and most moist one I've ever had was cooked by my one of my cousins, who was like a sister to me, decades ago.

Honorable mention: Kelsey and Kim's in Atlantic City, N.J., which is walking distance from our timeshare. Great food, plentiful portions and very good service.

Cannelloni de Langosta Three tender cannelloni pastas filled with Maine lobster meat, shrimp, pan-seared scallops and sautéed shallots blended with a lobster sherry cream reduction, smothered with a lobster sherry Mornay cheese sauce and pieces of lobster.

Served at Columbia Restaurant in the Ybor area of Tampa, Fla. This restaurant itself is magnificent and the dish I posted is mouth watering to say the least. Very rich but oh so tasty!
Of course for seafood lovers only.

Oh, I love Jersey. Just enjoying joking about us...

Kahlua cheesecake?

Pasta stuffed with lobster?

I think I am loving this thread...

That fish place I mentioned...in Keyport...

Keyport Fishery

http://keyportfishery.com/our-menu.html

take out only. The locals just get it and walk out to the pier nearby, or eat the food in the cars parked by the bay.

local tradition. Been going there since the 60s.

If you go, the combo platter is good.

It is lightly fried, but that description does not give it justice. The stuff is out of this world.

Scallops are the best. Clam strips are amazing, crab cakes are amazing...

long lines, especially during peak hours.

People literally travel from out of state to go there...

and it is just this tiny tiny place...

My mother was a wonderful cook. Everything she made was superb .. trouble is, because she worked, we didn't get special meals until the weekends. Her Japanese dishes were beyond compare. She made delicious crab and soups.

Our daughter took Cordon Bleu classes, so, everything she cooks is delicious. Aside from that, our favourite restaurant, Auberge, is where we've had our best meals. That's where daughter's wedding reception was.

Even though I am basically a gourmet cook (French trained)...the best foods I can remember are:

Circle Inn's Onion Rings (Mansfield, Ohio) - long story here, the maker we assume went to her grave without sharing the recipe and if the restaurant ran out of the secret breading, the customers had to wait till the next day when she came to work with the big bowl of
dry breading mix under her arm.

Tangerine Cake (Orlando, Florida).

Bread (made from a French mister oven) at (Cristner's - formerly Del Frisco's) - out of this world, beyond description, words don't do it justice.

Babcock's Donuts - Mansfield, Ohio - another took it to the grave recipe, I'd guess.

Isn't it amazing that you can spend money on so called "upscale" restaurants and eateries and not remember the food like you do the best "mom & pop" places that cook with love and generous ingredients...owners that beam with pleasure when you complement the chef?!

That's my answer, too. Nothing beats my mom's cooking. She mostly cooked Mediterranean food, but after my paternal grandma taught her down-home American farm-style cooking, mom took it to the next level.

My sister is a great cook, too, and she always bring something when she visits. Last night she brought us a meatloaf that even my super-finicky granddaughter liked. I know meatloaf is a "simple" dish, but like our mom, everything Bonnie makes tastes brighter than you expect it to.

Laurie is totally crab crazy!

I've had some excellent meals, at restaurants....and some that weren't. The one that seems to stick in my mind is the Deep Dish Chicago Pizza's I had years ago...wish I could find a local pizza place that made those. My wife is a great cook, and she comes up with meals far better than most restaurants.

Boiled Maine lobster
New Haven pizza
Beef bourguignon
Bread

My mother used to make these small, individual casseroles in crockery pots, baked in the oven. All I know is, they contained lobster pieces in a creamy, sherry flavored sauce topped with buttery breadcrumbs. Heaven.

A peasant kind of dish my grandmother taught me. Simply grated raw potatoes, eggs and flour dumplings cooked in boiling water, then sauteed in melted butter and softened onions.

Back in the day, because of the nature of a job, my wife and I got wined and dined for several years at the finest restaurants in San Francisco and New York. Looking back on it, neither of us can recall a plate of food that was worth remembering.

I would have to say my mom's cooking too. In fact, I won't even go to any of the Armenian restaurants here in town
because I know they won't taste anything like what I'm used to. I've tried.

My uncle's used to have a hofbrau here in town that made the best reuben/rueben sandwiches. Piled high w/either corned beef or pastrami (your choice) sauerkraut, swiss cheese, I always asked for it to be doubled dipped, and served on a peda bun.
OMG it was so good. I would only it half at a time...now I'd prob eat the whole thing!

ok, another one...

I spent a few weeks on a farm outside of Eugene, Oregon. He had a few bee hives. He planted special flowers, just for the bees.

The raw honey, right from the hive, was out of this world! Have never tasted anything close to that since...

it had these rich fruit tones...not just the sweetness.

I've bought raw honey from the store since. And also in the comb. Still, nothing close to that stuff from the farm.

Meals cooked by my Mom in the summertime growing up. We had a large garden, corn on the cob, tomatoes, squash, okra, black eye and purple hull peas, new potatoes, eggplant, green beans, pinto beans, onion (rings!), lettuce and greens of all types. Watermelon, cantaloupe, plums and pears. Always, the cornbread warm from the oven with butter. Sometimes, plates of fried chicken fresh from a farm.

Oh, the good old days, all of that stuff, just out the back door!

That sounds soooooooooooooooo good! And not just the food itself, but, you know that sense of all the things that surround a good meal with family...

The best food I've ever eaten was made by my Italian maternal grandmother. Everything she made was wonderful. Breads: Pizza Bianca (similar to Focaccia), Grissini, Casatiello (Easter Bread), Pane Pugliese, and more. Several types of tomato sauce, zuppa, and insalata, different types of pasta, seafood, and meat dishes. Biscotti, Panettone, Cristoli, Pizza Fritta (better known as Zeppolli), I loved it all. My family was full of great cooks. I'm a pretty good cook myself.

I've also been to great restaurants and had memorable meals. Too many to list, but here's a few. The freshest raw oysters on the half shell in Charleston, SC and Portland, ME. Cioppino in Provincetown, MA. In Jamaica, Jerk Chicken and Passion Fruit Panna Cotta; and in the Bahamas, conch fritters and conch chowder. Cowboy Steak in Kansas City. Cherries Jubilee in Nova Scotia. I could be here all day, lol! 😊

Bella ✌️
