Best vacation spot ever

It was probably my very first trip to Italy way back in the 80's... we drove the whole way there, (aside from the ferry to France) through the ice and snow of the Alps through France, and Switzerland...the Alps are very scary in winter time we lost count of the trucks we saw which had gone over the side as we drove down the other side from France through the Mont Blanc tunnel .. Spectacular mountain range but very dangerous.. . On the return journey we travelled through Germany, Holland and France... .

I have to think it was our trip to Australia. We went first to Melbourne where we watched penguins at Phillip Island. From there we took a train to Sydney. Never saw so many sheep in my life. We went to a zoo there and learned that a Koala has the softest fur we have ever touched. Next we flew up to Cairns and went snorkeling on the Barrier Reef. Great trip.

We had some great vacations together back in the day, tent camping and roughing it in the wilderness, states in the US including Alaska, and beautiful Canada. I think the one that could be considered the best were the couple of times in the early 80s when we went to Hawaii. Both times we spent 2-3 weeks there, traveled light and stayed away from the tourist areas. We island hopped and went to the Big Island, Maui, Molokai, Kauai, etc.

We always rented a car and took it everywhere to explore every beach and natural area. There were beaches, like a black beach where we were completely alone, so romantic. We also enjoyed some snorkeling in crystal clear waters viewing beautiful fish as seen in a salt water aquarium. We bought boogie boards to use in the ocean, my husband stayed where the waves broke and rode them, I went way out and just enjoyed bobbing on the swells. When we left we gave them to some native children there, great people! Those were the days when I looked good in a bikini. :p

We only went to one luau and loved the Kalua Pig, also was able to eat delicious Pig Plates in some local tiny hole in the wall type places. Good memories from all our vacations. 👩‍❤️‍👨

We've had some nice vacations, but perhaps the best one was a few months after I retired. We closed up the house, loaded up the truck, and headed for Canada....with no specific itinerary. We went straight North and entered Canada at the Lake of the Woods, spent a couple of days at Kenora, Ontario, then headed West. We visited several places as we traveled, and got as far west as Edmonton...where we spent a couple of days at that huge West Edmonton Mall/hotel....biggest shopping center in North America. Then, on to Jasper, and all the beautiful mountains in that area. Then, South to the Columbia Ice Field....spent a day on the glacier. There is a "triangle" between Jasper, Kamloops, and Banff that has some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in N. America. We exited Canada south of Calgary, spent a day at Glacier National Park in Montana, then worked our way back home....stopping in Denver for a couple of days to visit relatives, and finally made it back to Kansas City almost 4 weeks after we left.
That was my "transition" from being "addicted" to work, and finally let me acknowledge "retirement".

Wife and I always just head down the road for a vacation
Posted this in a thread of mine, early on

Spur of the moment

I've worked around tightly scheduled (very talented) individuals, that when going on vacation, generate a huge itinerary of going here or there at a certain time or day, reserving accommodations, scheduling even the purchase of the tickets for the scheduled events, and scheduling alternate events in case of weather, or an act of god (or satan)............

I find it more relaxing, and even more adventuresome to just go.
Just pack a few things, and go down the road.

One time we ended up on the coast, about 9 pm. Turned out there was a major event happening, and we became part of a caravan of seekers of vacancies. We even started waving at each other while in route, feigning drag racing while at stop lights, pointing/mocking when getting the lead to the next motel entrance, and pointing back when the no vacancy sign came within sight. It turned in to a very fun happening all by itself. Kind of an unregimented rally.

Thought we'd be doing some car camping when we found an out-of-the-way place that became a favorite over the years.
The Seagull Motel
Lincoln City
Right on the beach
Old, but clean
Fed the seagulls on the fly, from out the 2nd floor window
Nights were filled at the quaint little karaoke bar on the corner, where most of us made complete tone deaf fools of ourselves
Except this one lady
The appearance of Mama Cass's bigger sister
Moo moo and all
Almost as pretty
Only sang better
Much much better

Good times

That sounds right up our alley. I love to vacation outside and away from the tourist areas. How fun, you are so lucky to have had that experience! I always get this whim to just grab our tent and go camp somewhere. We are going to San Pedro this dec. We rent a house on the beach off the beaten path with our good friends and explore the area on golf carts. My favorite thing to do is fish and snorkel. I could do that all day. That black beach where you were alone sounds so cool! I can almost picture it. 😄

For our 30th anniversary, we booked through, what is now Jetsetter - a discount site - and stayed in a very upscale resort on the north shore of Jamaica! We had a wonderful week although the resort closed while we were there so we were sent to the Ritz Carlton (no longer there). It was a HUGE step down!! But, we enjoyed the quiet relaxation at both places, dialed down the stress and the food was amazing!! Was so beautiful and we never could have afforded it "retail."

We may rent a house on the beach around Newport, Oregon sometime in the distant future, hope you guys have lots of fun in San Pedro! We don't do tent camping anymore, we're older now and like to get off the ground when we're out for weeks at a time. Plus we have our furkids who travel along with us. We have a pop up camper that sits in the bed of our pickup, pics of places we've been are in my albums (media) here, you can check them out if you like by going to my profile page. We're leaving again for a couple of weeks after the holiday.

Cool. I’ll take a look at your pics. I was thinking of traveling for a couple of weeks and rent a small camper but we have two dogs and I don’t know what I would do with them if we went to eat or something. Any ideas? We’ve never traveled up northeast or northwest. We want to. What’s Oregon like? We love wilderness.

Many years ago we went to Niagara Falls and Canada. I had a great time. Especially loved going under the falls. The lights at night on the falls are magnificent!

Our favorite so far was Bird Island Belize. We lucked out and got a decent rate before it became well known. It’s a little tiny island that has two small houses. That’s all that will fit. It’s on a reef so we swam and snorkeled and fished from kayaks. It was a once in a livetime trip. The price has tripled so we can’t afford it anymore and there’s a waiting list but if you have the $ it’s well worth it. It’s like living in a camper as far as electrical etc.

I get to go on my best vacation on a regular basis. My favorite is right here in North Carolina. A little island called Topsail Island. We always stay at the Sea Vista Motel, which is the last motel on the southern tip of the island, in the town of Topsail Beach. It's like a step back in time. We always stay on the third floor, and all you see is ocean.

We've been there on the Fourth of July, and barely see a soul. It's very secluded, which suits me perfectly. There is lots of development farther up the island, but not much where we stay. Not much for restaurants, I do miss that.

I never knew I was a beach person until I found this place. It's beautiful.

Nice! I’ll have to check that out for sure!
