Beware of unskilled Dental Hygienists!

What follows is absolutely true. I am naming no names, for legal reasons.

I had my teeth cleaned, at a local dental office chain, about a year and a half ago. It was a great experience, so I went back for another cleaning, a year ago. That time around, the hygienist, who was brand new, came into the teeth cleaning area fully gloved, shielded and masked. To this day, I could not pick her out in a line-up if my life depended on it. She was brusque, unfriendly and the experience was bad: As she cleaned my teeth with the ultrasonic unit, she constantly looked away as new clients arrived and office personnel walked by. The area we were in was in an "open office" space, having only half-walls, no doors. The problem was, she kept the ultrasonic machine running the whole time and kept it shooting at my gums, instead of my teeth. I could feel it, but it wasn't painful, so I let it slide. Afterwards, she freaked out about a red streak on my gums. She had done a detailed pre-procedure check before the cleaning. The red streak was obviously not there because she never said a thing about it. It was clear, to me, that she had caused it with her sloppy procedure technique. To make a long story short, I found out I was one of her first, if not first, clients/victims. The owner told me he had trained her himself. My gums started getting very bumpy looking, over the next month, or so. My oral surgeon, a guy who has known me, and worked on me, for about the last ten years, took a look and said, "I'm at a loss to explain what's going on. I've never seen this, before." My gums turned white over areas where I had extractions. I think the ultra-sound destroyed the underlying gum matrix. The owner of the chain saw me and told me the white was "beneficial bacteria!" Truly nonsense, as there is no way to take a scraping in the area, and I have my own lab connected to my business. I know about bacterial sampling. So, now I'm going to see my periodontist. I'll get his take on the matter. The pain is minimal, but it is annoying to the point where I feel depressed as I go about my day. It effects my work.

My point in posting the above is this: Do not consider teeth cleanings, that involve ultra-sonic cleaners, to be a walk in the park. In the hands of an unskilled hygienist, you may have a less than favorable outcome, like me. Keep in mind that you can request no ultra-sonic device cleanings, as I now will do. Always ask how many cleanings your new hygienist has done. If you're uncomfortable with him/her, right off the bat, request somebody else.

Best of luck to you.

Wow, thank you for that warning. That's a nightmare. Keep us updated on what your periodontist says. I hope you'll be okay. Take care :rose:

Went to the periodontist. As I expected, he pitched a deep-root scaling/planing, and told me that the area of my concern was just fine. I see how specialists always tell you that what you really need just happens to be what they offer, no matter if it has nothing to do with what's actually wrong with you and/or why you came in to see them! So many are simply thieves! Also, I was asked to write down where I went to get the cleaning that I believe messed me up. I would not be surprised if this periodontist was golf buddies with the general dentistry guy. Yeah, thick as thieves, indeed!

I hate to do teeth cleaning. I have a lot of gap between my teeth after the continuous cleaning. I'm confused whether to fill the gap with something else.
