Big changes are happening in 2025 around U.S. senior driver’s license changes.

@Imogene , In Tennessee ...

- All drivers, regardless of age, must renew their licenses every eight years, no shortened renewal period for seniors
- A vision test is not automatically required at renewal. It's offered at the discretion of Driver Services Division (DSD); written and road tests may also be required if DSD deems it necessary.
- There is no statewide mandate for special age-based testing, such as cognitive or in-person road exams solely due to age

When Additional Checks Can Happen ...
- Tennessee law allows medical or vision reviews only if a referral or concern arises. This could be from a family report, medical provider, or law enforcement.
- DSD may require a Medical Examination Form and can ask drivers to re-take any part of the licensing process if needed.

Any Pending Legislation in Tennessee? ...
- In 2016, there was a proposal to introduce a vision test for drivers 76 and older, but it didn't pass into law.
- Today, no new law targeting seniors has been enacted.

Bottom Line For Tennessee ...
- If you're renewing in Tennessee, you can expect the standard 8‑year renewal cycle.
- A vision test is optional, triggered only when DSD asks for it, not based on age alone.
- There's no automatic cognitive or behind-the-wheel exam for senior drivers.

Is there an official Tennessee website seniors drivers can refer to? ...
- Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security - Senior Drivers

@Imogene ... Nothing has changed with Tennessee.

I did have to take the written test in 2024 when renewal.
Insurance seems to be rising about $50 a year.

Driving rights are issued by the state one lives in and is allowed to drive in neighboring steights thru cooperation.
Like you have a neighboring state driving license, an in il. you pay for a driver's license thru the sec. of state.
I used to be able to drive in Mexico with my Insurance. I quit going there many years ago with all the drug problems.

The Feds can not regulate a State Sovereign issue, it is baloney. If a State has certain restrictions, abide, don't drive or Sue. Why do you think a DL is valid in any state when traveling. Every State has to honor another's under Full Faith and Credit and the Interstate Commerce provision.

This is fake news. Each state makes its own rules for drivers licenses and there are no federal rules. This also appeared on another form that I belong to.

changes to drivers license requirements for seniors allegedly is due to the large increase in the senior population drivers.

US Senior Driver's License Changes: What Seniors Need to Know Now
generally speaking any "article" with a one size fits all headline is not worth my time as driver's licensing is state specific in the US. I have in past clicked on these type things.
I feel these are either a really naive person or AI writing this type of generalized nonsense with clickbait titles.

I'll give up my driver's license when they pry my cold dead fingers from around it.
