Big Toe Pain

A few years ago I had sharp pain in the 1st joint of my big toe. Someone, told me that it was a build up of... something. BUT, I've completely forgotten what they told to do. I did what they told me, and pain went away. BUT, pain is now back.
Anyway, does anyone here know what this sharp pain might be ? It hurts like the devil.

Uric acid!
It is called a Gout attack; I have had a couple of doozies and they hurt like haties...

Mine was caused by a problem I had with my blood pressure medication. I lost around 60 lbs. back in 2016. I did it over a year. I did not think about calling my doctor and adjusting my medications. I had a gout attack, and my doctor gave me some pills to take, they made it better real fast. But within a few days it hit again. This time my doctor had me come in and did some blood work on me. He soon realized that my BP meds were too high for my new weight. That did the trick and I have had no problem since. And I have maintained my weight also...

Eating certain food can also bring on high Uric acid levels causing gout, so do your research and see your doctor.

Gout is nothing to fool around with. Other than hurting really bad, it will destroy the joints and cause a permanent problem with arthritis in the joint. So, see your doctor.... don't let it go!

My first thought was likewise, gout; however there might be other causes,
and especially if the memory was correct that you did something advised when it happened in the past, and the pain then went away for a long time.
(unless what you did was to eliminate foods that could cause uric acid build-up, such as red meat... ?)

Have you tried elevating it, or applying cold, and resting it? Just ideas to consider or to try, in case they relieve it sooner than you could be seen by a doctor.

Yes, I think gout may have been what I was told about. I don't recall, however, what I did a few years ago to make it go away.
I looked up gout on the net and from what I read it sounds like I have ACUTE gout.
Thank you all for the help. :)

I have not tried elevating it, nor applying cold, yet. I am, however resting it.
I don't recall what I was told to do, back a few years ago, but I'm sure it was not cutting back on red meat.

As I said earlier, your doctor can give you a prescription for a medication that will stop the pain, when you get it! It works really well. You may find as I did, that you are eating or taking a medication/ supplement that is causing the onset of gout. Work with you doctor, in time gout, going untreaded, will destroy the joint leaving permanent arthritis in the joint.

The joint inflammation is not from an injury or too much walking. It is uric acid put out within your body that settles in you lower extremities joints. Cold might make you feel less pain but will not eliminate the uric acid. Aspirin can help the pain also, but it too will not cure the problem. Certain foods can cause the problem, but only because your body is not filtering things properly. You need the medication from the doctor or maybe as Gaer said above ("Earth Clinic"), may have something 'holistic' that might work as I am not well informed on any of those potential solutions. So, check them out also if you want. But, treating this like an injury or sprain...will not stop the pain and damage being done in the joint.

I know how this hurts, I was amazed how bad my big toe hurt when I had my first gout attack.

I agree with this post. Excellent info.

I had only asked if he'd tried cold, because it seemed not %100 clearly gout, and might possibly have been toe pain from other causes;
And also, I thought it might take time to be seen by a doctor (I think it was posted on a weekend) so even if only for temporary relief, it was just meant to be a possible action to consider.

Sometimes if you have a back injury your big toe will hurt.

Did not know that, but I am not surprised.

I have bad knees, osteoarthritis, my feet hurt too. The Doctor told me that was the result of the knees and a nerve that runs from the knees to the feet. After he told me that I eased off on some leg exercises, as the knee pain lessened the foot pain went away. Funny how those things work.
