Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates is stepping down from the company's board to spend more time on philanthropic activities.

He says he wants to focus on global health and development, education and tackling climate change.

One of the world's richest men, Mr Gates, 65, has also left the board of Warren Buffett's massive holding company, Berkshire Hathaway.

Mr Gates stepped down from his day-to-day role running Microsoft in 2008.

Announcing his latest move, Mr Gates said the company would "always be an important part of my life's work" and he would continue to be engaged with its leadership.

But he said: "I am looking forward to this next phase as an opportunity to maintain the friendships and partnerships that have meant the most to me, continue to contribute to two companies of which I am incredibly proud, and effectively prioritise my commitment to addressing some of the world's toughest challenges."

Mr Gates is listed by Forbes as the world's second richest man after Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, and is worth $103.6bn (Ā£84.4bn).

He made his fortune developing software for the personal computer.

Bill Gates Article

Personally, I have always respected the man for all he has done. I find him a most charitable person, too.

The most amazing fact bout a billionaire-Warren Buffett lived in the house he and his wife bought when thy got married for decades. Granted he has other properties but his Nebraska home is very middle class. What was so admirable him was his philosophy "If I don't need it why buy it?" No mansions no, fancy cars, etc. Cool guy.

Microsoft found a very able CEO in Satya Nadella, who had been a long time employee at Microsoft before he was made CEO. Gates was too loyal to his friend Steve Ballmer, who almost drove MSFT to the ground for 14 years as its CEO. Nadella was employed in the cloud division, and the cloud is what saved the company. I was so happy when Ballmer was sacked. I guess Gates now finally feels free and confident to give up control of his company and concentrate on his philantrophy.
