O’Reilly Out at Fox News as Harassment Claims Pile Up

Bill O’Reilly has been forced out of his position as a prime-time host at Fox News, the company said on Wednesday, after the disclosure of settlements involving sexual harassment allegations against him. His abrupt and embarrassing ouster ends his two-decade reign as one of the most popular and influential commentators in television.

“After a thorough and careful review of the allegations, the company and Bill O’Reilly have agreed that Bill O’Reilly will not be returning to the Fox News Channel,” 21st Century Fox, the parent company of Fox News, said in a statement.

What O'Reilly did was disgraceful and I don't doubt for a second he sexually harassed these women.
I don't doubt he was as rude, obnoxious, and full of himself in his personal life as he was on TV.

With that said I liked his show and thought he really tried to be "fair to facts" and not to "accept as fact" something that was unproven.

I think he and Fox would have been able to ride this out if they wanted.
As big a cable news star he is though, they're all replaceable.

Looking forward to checking out the new lineup

Corporate America is frequently the toughest and most stringent on non discrimination and harassment laws & policy. And for FOX a corporation first and foremost not to enforce EEO or equal employment opportunity laws and policy is appalling. Even in the 80s and 90s I remember going through mandatory yearly training including videos, handouts and meetings. Management was so scared of lawsuits & their bosses/HR they read EEO policy memos and booklets verbatim no fooling around. To top it off it's not just about touching & grabbing or direct sexual talk. I've seen bosses reprimanded for calling their girl friend employee a female dog not in her presence. I've seen other careers killed because employees called those 1800 complaint numbers crying their bosses were mean or bullying them and even though unfounded their careers were all but killed because corporations are so scared of lawsuits that they eliminate what they view as a potential problem/lawsuit without hesitation. I'm stunned FOX corporate lawyers didn't warn or plead with executive management that bad/harassing behavior simply cannot be tolerated from a financial standpoint alone.

That being said I'd watch O'Reilly for the Talking Points Memo which was to the point, accurate and well stated. He had a way of explaining and giving his opinion on issues that most other media would avoid conservative or liberal. His interviews were pretty standard fare.

It seems like it was more FOX deciding he was costing them more than he was worth than not tolerating his alleged behavior. They put out a lot of money to try and keep a lid on it but when sponsors started leaving in droves...

And that's the bottom line, no other reason for it. If it wasn't costing them more than his worth to them, he'd likely still be around.

I enjoyed O'Reilly much of the time. He was always well informed, and I liked the way he approached his subjects. I can't imagine somebody with such a successful career being so stupid as to sexually harass co-workers. Look at how much his good old boy attitude has cost him! What idiotic choices he made!

That said, I think society has become VERY thin skinned and so easily offended, and companies are afraid of lawsuits, so make overly-aggressive rules. One of my son's female co-workers (in a mostly-male company) was transferred to a company location in another state for a year. While she was gone, she lost almost 100 pounds. She hadn't worn make up, stylish clothing or done much with her hair when she was heavy, but after her weight loss, she fixed herself up. She and my son were work friends and often sat together at lunch or chatted during breaks both before and after her weight loss. One day she started crying. He asked her what the matter was, and she said she was so hurt that NOBODY had said anything about her new appearance. She was proud of her accomplishment, but her self-esteem was affected because she felt that nobody actually saw her. Her co-workers were proud of her and WANTED to compliment her on her new look, BUT company policy was so strict about sexual harassment that everyone was afraid to give her a compliment!

Never watched him and if not mistaken he had sexual harassment charges brought against him several years ago. Believe a settlement was reached in those. Surprised he wasn't let go back then.

Do you think this was 'ever' the first time a well known personallity was ever in trouble over some kind of harrasement or other? The media of late has made such a big deal out of the littlest things because it draws more attention?

O’Reilly is gone because Rupert Murdoch's sons, Lachlan and James hated him and wanted him out.

He and Fox would have survived if he had stayed. The powerful could get away with murder "IF" they want to wait the American people out.
Rush, Bill Clinton, Anthony Weiner (the first time), all come to mind.

If it's all true, Mr. O'Reilly is a hypocrite and a very sick man. I pray his victims, his family and hope he gets help. That being said, Those who never watched him give an interview missed something special. That's where he shined.

Unfortunately, scandals and power seem to go hand and hand. You would only hope some of these people would learn from others mistakes.

Always be careful whose toes you step on the way up because they may be connected to the foot that kicks you in the a$$ on the way back down.

I used to watch him years ago until Fox and him started settling law suits and I realized what a pig he was. When a person or network shows you who they are. Its best to believe them. Stopped watching Fox years ago. There is a big difference between flirting and sexual harassment and I saw both when I was working.

O’Reilly, the biggest star on cable TV news, will walk away from Fox with as much as $25 million, a severance figure set by the contract he signed only last month, a source close to the negotiations confirmed to The Post.

Gee, think he'll survive? He's 67 and can collect SS too.

I was surprised FOX let the complaints mount up and apparently did little in training let alone firings & suspensions. Again I remember going through mandatory anti harassment training as early as the 1980s working in corporate America. That being said think about all the lower level employees that get harassed and get nothing but a fired or reprimanded boss along with a little whistle blower protection for a while.

I wonder if the show personalities who get individual contracts have to go through the same HR training the average hourly employee must. Or maybe getting an individual contract makes them a quasi contractor and not core employee exempting them from a lot of workplace policy.

I never watched him either. Apparently that behavior was tolerated there - Roger Ailes was guilty of the same thing. I suspect O'Reilly let his fame go to his head and thought he was untouchable because of it.

What I don't understand is why employers don't write a clause in their golden parachute contracts that says you don't get said golden parachute if you are terminated for cause, or if you bail because you know you will be terminated.

At the salary he was getting I suspect he was in a position to dictate the terms of his contract... that's a different world than most of us know. What did he get, wasn't it a year's salary of $25M?

I thought his series on the Revolution was fabulous.
