Blood sugar spike.....no more Gatorade.

As I've done for many years yesterday afternoon I drank a 32 oz. bottle of orange Gatorade while mowing, working in the yard and sweating up a storm for about three hours.....I always understood Gatorade to be good for a person because it replaces salt, potassium and electrolites depleted when sweating heavily.

Because of my double vision scare a few weeks back I've been trying to be a good little boy where my BS and diet are concerned and my doc told me that he wants a record of my BS before breakfast or coffee (overnite fasting) and before supper after only having a light lunch.

I was thinking while showering that my BS would be super low because of my working out in the yard for three hours but when I checked it I about hit the floor......before supper my BS has been averaging around 99 to 112 but when I checked it it was 179. which I attribute to consuming the last of the 32 oz. bottle of Gatorade within about 30 minutes of checking my BS.

Salt, potassium and electrolites be damned.....no more Gatorade for this fella, from now on it's straight plain ole water to quench my thirst and rehydrate.

I am TYPE II, almost comatose in '15 spent 4 days hospitalized. I find that my BS is high after showering before breakfast, they call it the morning spike. If you test just after rising it will be close to normal, with any activity your pancreas will produce more glucose (source of energy) into your blood stream. I also found that my BS was high after my walk. Again activity & more glucose into your blood.

What I found helped was eating more complex carbs for meals throughout the day. Yes, lighter lunch but I have to be aware of low BS, (first indication is shakey feeling). I was advised to eat something prior to bedtime to prevent drops during the night. I choose air pop (popcorn /w melted butter - low complex carbs). Complex carbs regulate the flow of glucose to help prevent spikes. Beans (legumes), oatmeal, sweet potatoes, eggs, coffee (get all my liquid here), popcorn (NOT microwave), nuts (pecans, walnuts - best) & whole dairy products are my friends. I eat vegetables (4 servings daily)- fruit (mostly berries).

I was also advised to have orange juice available for drops, juice is the fastest way to get a dose of sugar, low BS is a 'killer'. I found the OJ would spoil after too much time in the refrig, so I keep carmel (Werther's) on hand. Your strips are subject to humidity, age,,,etc. The FDA allows a 15-20% tolerance for strips so a reading between 80-130 is normal. I only use the strips as a ballpark reading, it's the A1C that is more accurate for me. Mine is 4.3-4.8. My BS can vary between 70 - 120. Also remember there are 45 companies making strips in the US with a the FDA tolerance it can be anywhere during the day.

Not a fan of Gatorade. I do remember the salt tablets the coach had us take after high school August football practices. It's a wonder it didn't kill us. (But don't drink any water - it'll cause you to cramp up!)

RW.......I've never have been a breakfast person (coffee only) but I do force down two slices of lightly buttered whole grain toast in the morning before taking my morning meds and supplements.

Trying to cut back, my lunch is normally a package (6) of little those toasted peanut butter crackers or about six saltines and a can of Vienna sausage with a apple.

I know all about the "shaking feeling"....if I do too much, like yesterday, I'll get the shakes and I'll normally consume a couple of those fruit flavored glucose tablets to get me calmed down.

You mentioned that your BS is higher after walking, I had no idea that physical exercise would raise BS I thought it was the other way around.....I guess I need to learn more about Type 2 diabetes.

I wish that my BS numbers were that good with or without the Gatorade!

If the Gatorade is important to you then I would right size the portion to one 15 gram serving or about 8 ounces. If it is not important to you definitely swap it out for a lower carb high fiber alternative like a juicy medium size orange or a glass of tomato juice.

It is really difficult to create a diet that you can live with when you have diabetes. I try to find a way to keep the carbs that are important to me, in smaller 15 gram portions, and fill in with high fiber low carb vegetables that help to fill me up.

Good luck!

In my case I found that I had to cut out all processed foods, breads, pasta, certain fruits(mostly melons, banana, oranges) ate more berries, sure do miss pizza though. Read labels, cut down on everything associated with sugar, believe me there is a grundle of those. I get my daily dose of grain with my morning oatmeal/crushed nuts. I avoid fat free foods, dangerous chems.

I consume whole dairy products but in moderation, real organic butter is good in moderation. I eat meat, limited red meat but lots of chicken, turkey, pork (all ok). I eat 20+ eggs a week, great nutritional value especially the yolks. Snack foods are out, peanut butter has too many additives, some organic/natural doesn't.

It's definitely a mine field out there. My HDL is high normal, my LDL is low (<100). My trigs is low, cholesterol is 170. I avoid salts, (BP is 65/115). It worked for me.

I never drink any of these "energy drinks" or soda pop. I, too, spend many hours working outdoors in warm/hot weather....and I drink nothing but water. My blood test results are staying nicely in the "safe" zone.

Just caught this thread. My hubby is also Type 2 Diabetic. This weekend he is enduring colonoscopy prep. For the energy drink he needed to mix the laxative in for the prep, they suggested Powerade Zero as the best choice of energy drinks for diabetics. You may want to try that if you do want to have one now and again.

My best friends 20 yo grandson is in end stage kidney failure and 1 of his doctors told them Gatorade is a huge factor in this...seems there can be to much minerals and such put into your body, good old water is the recommendation.
Seems most of the sports drinks, sodas and diet soda have some accountability in assorted illnesses.

Gatorade is garbage. Interesting to note that its inventor died of kidney failure. I work in the trees in 100°+ weather. I drink 8-10 bottles of water, and never have to use a restroom because I sweat everything out. As a young tree guy, I drank Gatorade, buying into the BS. Eventually, I realized it sickened me. Water is the way to go!

I would be hesitant to drink any of these "energy" drinks. Many of them are loaded with excess amounts of caffeine...would be like drinking several cups of coffee, in a very short period of time. Plain water, or even good fruit juice, would be a far better option than most of these concoctions.

The problem with alot of these sport drinks is that they are designed(not necessarily marketed) for extreme physical activity and sweating in which those minerals/ingredients are actually lost and needed by the body. If the body doesn't need them like anything else an 'overdose' of them will cause issues. Too many think more is better or will actually make them stronger. Sports drinks and college age kids are a huge problem. By the same token a lot of medical people now recommend things like gatorade AFTER severe stomach issues like the runs or vomiting to replace those ingredients.

My husband and I never drink them..just when they are required as part of colonoscopy prep, which he just went through this weekend.

Like most here, both of us prefer water or juice. He loves his iced tea, as well. We like to use the powder packets of flavor that you put in water. I like them especially as I do like occasional flavor in my water, and do not like any of the sparkly drinks.
