Well it seems like he had mental issues (or had a secret life in the past, since he thought the CIA was out to kill him). But seems was a good person.

The man was known to pick up the bill when other customers didn’t have cash, local store workers said, and he was obsessed with mystery and spy books – aspiring to write a book about spies."

I don't know how he thought he'd get a chance to use his poisons on an intruder. It must've been hard living in constant fear like that. Either he mishandled his poisons or committed suicide.
 
Who knows what he may have been involved in, involuntarily or not! I find this scary, but maybe just due to the scary times we live in.

Have you ever noticed criminals are often spoken of that way- "He was such a good guy!" etc.
