Bonbon Surprise Cookies

My mom used to make these. They are tasty as well as fun. You don't know what will be in the middle.

1/2 cup soft butter
3/4 cup sifted confection (powdered) sugar
1 Tbsp vanilla
1 1/2 cups flour
1/8 tsp salt

date pieces
chocolate pieces
candied cherries
nuts (hazel, almonds, pecans and walnuts work well)


Heat oven to 350F. Cream butter, sugar and vanilla thoroughly. Mix flour and salt, then add to creamed mixture and mix until combined. (If dough is dry, add a little milk). Wrap a tablespoon of dough around a filling and place 1 inch apart on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake 12 - 15 minutes. Let cool on rack, then if desired, dip in icing:
