Boulder , is set to become the first state in the US for 50 years to ban 'fat phobia' by law. And it is not alone in its aims to legislate in this way. Across America, politicians have been planning laws to add a person's weight to the list of characteristics such as race, age, religion and sexual orientation that are protected from discrimination.
Urged on by 'fat pride' groups which have sometimes served as official advisers, several other states are considering similar laws, including New York, Massachusetts, Vermont and New Jersey.

Meanwhile, cities across the country have already started passing laws aimed at preventing discrimination against the fat – San Francisco, Washington DC and, as of last month, New York City, among them.

As the case of super-fit Colorado shows, the drive for fat acceptance is more about ideology than health.

Conservative states such as West Virginia and Kentucky, with the worst obesity problems in the country, are having no truck with such laws. But staunchly Democrat Colorado, woke to its core, sees itself as one of the most progressive beacons in the US. In 2014, it became the first state to legalise 'recreational' cannabis.

In fact, in almost all cases it is Left-wing cities and states that are pandering to the 'anti-fattist' lobby with new legislation – and very often the same ones that have tried to decriminalise drug use with disastrous consequences in terms of increased addiction rates and crime.

Health experts warn that the new legal protections could further fuel the appalling problems of obesity in the US caused by sugared drinks, highly processed junk food and sedentary lifestyles by normalising the condition.

How Fat Pride became the new battleground in America's culture wars

Indeed, the battle against fatphobia is already taking hold in Britain. In 2018, London-based Danish comedian and fat acceptance campaigner Sofie Hagen accused Cancer Research UK of 'fat-shaming' after it had the temerity to run a campaign raising awareness that obesity is the biggest preventable cause of cancer after smoking.

'How the f***ing f*** is this OK?' she wailed on social media, demanding the adverts be withdrawn.

Describing dieting as 'dangerous', she insisted it 'has been proved time and time again to be one of the worst things you can do to your body'. The charity countered that only 15 per cent of people know about obesity's link with cancer and its campaign was based on scientific evidence.

In America, some 42 per cent of adults are now technically obese (compared to around 30 per cent or so in Britain). The percentage of US children who are obese has quadrupled since the 1960s and now stands at around one in five.

The result of all this obesity is crushing health problems – drastically increased rates of heart disease, stroke, Type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer – as well as a huge estimated annual medical cost of nearly $173 billion (£138 billion) in 2019.

Black and Latino people are disproportionately affected with half of adult African-Americans obese – which perhaps helps explain why Left-leaning politicians are so desperate to accommodate the anti-fattist lobby.

well for one thing, it's not impossible to hire the heavy set workers and get them into a good health insurance program at work to help combat this. our health insurance offers incentive by reducing our premiums each paycheck with a wellness program. it comes with other benefits too.

it might actually be better for them than being stuck with no job cuz they're too "ugly" to work in the eyes of corporate. they have just as much right to earn a living as everyone else.

great article and thanks for sharing @hollydolly!

What a pathetic, bias, right-wing piece of propaganda that article is. I mean it's laughable.

I picked out this one sentence, because picking it all apart would take too long and I don't have the energy today. But this line about increased addiction rates is completely false. There is no significant increase in addiction after legalization, and in fact it seems to help people to drink less alcohol.

That article reads like a campaign leaflet from a right wing, unhinged, lunatic.

Just saying.

Maybe politicians should stop doing things like taking interviews where they extoll the virtues of and show off their industrial freezers full of chocolate ice cream?

I can and do outwork people thinner than me. Weight has no ethic. Friday at work my work station was such a mess you wouldn't believe me. This harms others. After following a thin and I guess attractive much younger female who had worked it the day before. This mess could not have been all her. Other's left a mess. I worked the same area Saturday. Everything I needed was there. Because my fat ass cleaned it up. And the people got what they needed and ethically should have had.

That said, I think this stuff is ridiculous. First, any excuse can be made. Yes of course that pretty thin woman was more qualified. I mean prove she isn't.

I am 100% against fat acceptance. If it was so easy, I'd have been 120 pounds years ago. I've struggled with my weight since I was an abused child. I don't accept it, but it's my reality.

I am not saying obesity is a super healthy thing. It's not. But if a person can ably do a job, and his size is irrelevant to the job, why is it OK to discriminate because he's obese. Ya know, I don't think Blacks live a healthy life, so I won't hire any.
BTW, go to a Walmart and count all the emaciated, unhealthily thin people going in the store- you'll only need one finger.

Any business owner worth their salt will tell you they want the best person for the job. Race, weight, sexual preferences, are not of interest. We only need these laws because discrimination is taking place. If we accept this, would be accept that blondes shouldn't hired? How about people under 5-foot? How about unattractive people?

Such a law doesn't mean you should hire obese people. In fact, I suspect it will have zero effect in that regard. It simply codifies the idea that if that happens, there are consequences.

Whoa. VaughnJB. I'm agreeing with you. :)

Expect that movement and its ideas have little chance of broader acceptance because it lacks common sense. Rather, reads more like those with narrow, unrealistic, rationalized ideas, thinking given recent legal movements in other previously oppressed social movements like gender issues, now might be able to legitimize their unpopular life choices. And no doubt enthusiastically supported by usual lawyer groups smiling in the background prodding advocates, eager to threaten and sue like PC police for $$$.

Sort of like trying to complain about obviously facially ugly people beyond just being plain or ordinary about not being liked by others or those that choose to tattoo their faces. It is a fact of higher Earth species worldwide that reproductive aesthetics are reality for obvious reasons. All of us ought have some level of innate human rights, especially regarding reasonable types of employment and being treated nicely. But that does not mean for the rest of us, approval of, much less liking, nor being inhibited from publicly criticizing.

Fat acceptance movement - Wikipedia

The fat acceptance movement argues that fat people are targets of hatred and discrimination. In particular, advocates suggest obese women are subjected to more social pressure than obese men.The movement argues that these attitudes comprise a fat phobic entrenched societal norm, evident in many social institutions, including the mass media, where fat people are often ridiculed or held up as objects of pity. Discrimination includes a lack of equal access to transportation and employment. Members of the fat acceptance movement perceive negative societal attitudes as persistent, and as being based on the presumption that fatness reflects negatively on a person's character. Fat activists push for change in societal, personal, and medical attitudes toward fat people. Fat acceptance organizations engage in public education about what they describe as myths concerning fat people.

Agreed. My partner manages a retail store for a non-profit and he hired a Black transexual woman as his assistant manager. He knew she was transexual because of the name on her driver's license due to the necessary background check. But she was the best person for the job so he hired her. She's working out well and no one else in the store gives a rat's patootie that she's trans. That's really all that counts.
