Michael Hackenburger was finally charged.

I could not watch the whole video of him whipping the tiger,so sad.

And on top of that, there is proof and. The Bowmanville Zoological park is disappointed and said the charges were unsupported. WTF?

I have been to that zoo, it is a small zoo with little in the way of employees. I think under those conditions animal cruelty has probably gone unchecked for years. The fewer the employees, the fewer the reports.

At least now you can bet the animal activists will be looking at this zoo more closely.

Unfortunately, we have such crummy animal protection laws in Canada that the outcome of this is debatable don't you think? A family run zoo known as Discovery Wildlife Park in Alberta has a history of continual egregious violations of care and despite being 'watched' by Zoocheck and other organizations, I think it's still in operation. Then I came across a mention of Bowmanville Zoo which broke my heart as I read it. Apparently in 2013 they had an aging cancer stricken elephant and while the town council voted against using her in an annual parade because she was so sick, there was such a hew and cry about her not being in it, that they retracted their decision. Poor elephant was euthanized a couple weeks after the parade which goes to show how sick she was. http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/barbara-cartwright/animal-welfare-2013_b_4481633.html

Then you just have to consider how many steers, calves and horses are killed or significantly injured every year at the Calgary Stampede and all that seems to happen is weeping, wailing and rhetoric. And the show goes on.

I also came across a report that compares the EU's animal welfare laws to Canada's and to say that we are lacking is an extremely generous remark! I even sent copies to all the relevant government offices when the Conservatives were in and got the usual polite form letter that had the audacity to commend us on our wonderful and proactive legislations. I think it came from Gerry Ritz's office and I was certainly in the mood to choke him that day!

So not only do we have crummy laws, but even when activists are 'looking closely' often nothing comes of it because of ignorance and lack of compassion on the part of people. Personally I refuse to attend anything that uses animals because I won't support abuse.

Debby,he was the trainer of the tiger used in the Life of Pi movie.

There was a petition online to file charges and also reccomended that one way we can somehow help, even if it doesn't seem much,is not ,like you said, attend anything like circuses or go to movies where animals are being used.

What surprised me is that he is not low in the chain of scum, this is someone who worked in a major big hit movie and I doubt nobody saw nothing.

That jerk has no conscience, and has the bloody gall to call himself an animal trainer.

I've seen the same personality type try to get submission from a young dog, at PetSmart, putting his foot on the side of the dog's head while he was on the floor. I said to him "that's not the way to train a dog". He left very quickly.

I took my grandchildren to
London zoo recently it
looked like to me that most
of the animals were drugged up
to make them all docile
I'd never go again it ain't cheap either
adults £24 pounds kids £ 17 pounds

Time to do away with zoo"s it's cruel
put em back in the wild or nature reserve

Hopefully, these animals would be safe on a nature preserve, but some are large and don't have enough employees to track poachers.
