My grandma used to put this on any scrapes I got as a kid. Probably to keep me from bothering her for something minor. She called it “monkey blood”. Burned like hell, definitely worse than whatever caused the cut in the first place.

Do you remember the burn/sting from this stuff?

I've never heard of it, but something I use regularly (and it stings when it's applied is 'New Skin' by Germolene.

It was either merthiolate or mercurochrome that we got sprayed inside our throats when we got sore throats.

Mom had a long-nozzled contraption that she'd stick in there and spray. It stung and tasted awful as it dripped down your throat.

Considering what they know now about the dangers of both substances, it's no wonder I'm brain dead these days. Thanks, Mom!

My parents used iodine and mercurochrome until, in their later years, they went on vacation with their doctor friend and he laughed and laughed at them.

As for mercury. My father brought home a 6 ounce jar of it to teach us about its unusual properties. We would often get it out to play with and stick our fingers in it to watch it snap back, or break it into marble size bits to roll across the floor. I'm sure we didn't wash our hands afterward. I don't remember ever washing our hands unless they were caked with mud.
