Witnesses say a car was driven into a crowd outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue and a man stabbed before marksmen arrived at the scene.
The horror unfolded just after 9.30am today on Yom Kippur, the holiest date in the Jewish calendar.

Greater Manchester Police has now confirmed two victims have died and three remain in a serious condition.

The suspect is also believed to be dead, but this will not be confirmed until a bomb disposal unit has dealt with a device that is believed to be strapped to his body.

Police said it had 'declared Plato' - the national code-word used by police and emergency services when responding to a 'marauding terror attack'.

Video shared on social media appears to show armed police officers pointing guns at someone laying on the ground as one screams to onlookers: 'Everyone move back, he has a bomb, go away.'

The person on the ground is seen starting to get up before there is the sound of a gunshot and they fall to the ground. Another person is also shown lying motionless on the ground outside the synagogue gates with blood around their head.

A white lorry marked 'bomb disposal' later arrived at the scene, and went behind the cordon outside the synagogue.

Police sources said it was 'too early' to determine the attacker's motivation.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said: 'Police were called to the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue, on Middleton Road, Crumpsall, at 9.31am by a member of the public, stating he had witnessed a car being driven towards members of the public and one man had been stabbed.'

The force said it declared a major incident at 9.37am.

The statement continued: 'Shots were fired by Greater Manchester Police firearms officers at 9.38am. One man has been shot, believed to be the offender. Paramedics arrived at the scene at 9.41am and are tending to members of the public.

'We are grateful to the member of the public whose quick response to what they witnessed allowed our swift action, and as a result the offender was prevented from entering the synagogue.'

I've just got home... and listening to the car radio, the news is just absolutely full of this..... just terrible...

fortunately according to some Jewish journalist.. the Synagogue was yet to be full of people. Some people were on their way with their families, only to get panicked phone calls telling them not to come, ..... can you imagine the horror of that?

It'll be interesting to see what nationality he was....

However to do this at anytime is awful but to do it on the Holiest day... is sickening... ,..now there's massive police presence at Synagogues throughout the country today

Very sad ...but not surprising in the UK these days. I've read in numerous sources over the past few years that Jewish Brits are increasingly fearful of their safety.
yes I've read that too.. and here particularly in North Lodon, there's a HUGE Jewish community... and I have never witnessed anyone be attacked, or abused verbally or physically in any way..

That's not to say it's not being done somewhere but I've never seen it...

The person who warned the first responders that the attacker had a bomb saved a lot of lives. To have the presence of mind to think of that with the chaos going on around him/her was the actions of a true hero. Too sad that person was also shot.

The attacker’s first name is Jihad, really says something about it doesn’t it? I don’t think any Jew was surprised this happened. All the chants of ‘death death to the IDF‘ that have been yelled for months on the streets in UK cities was a huge give away that chanters and their followers want a lot of people murdered. Imagine attacking a synagogue on Yom Kippur and murdering two Jews and hospitalising three more. It is vile and disgusting. The Jihadists will keep killing until they take everything they want is my best guess.

Jihad Al-Shamie, 35, a British citizen of Syrian descent...

Two men aged in their 30s and a woman in her 60s have been arrested on suspicion of planning a terrorist attack, police added.

The horror began at 9.31am when Al-Shamie - who is yet to be formally identified -rammed into people with a car before stabbing a man outside the synagogue.

Two Jewish men were killed and three others seriously injured in the attack, which unfolded on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.

Police said officers were 'working to understand the motivation behind the attack'. Earlier the Daily Mail exclusively revealed that the suspect was an Islamic terrorist.

Al-Shamie's name has reportedly not appeared in initial searches of police and security service records, and he is not thought to have been under investigation.

Further checks are being carried out to see if any of his details appear anywhere in records of other investigations.
