"Last of the Summer Wine" is said to be light comedy. I don't think it's very funny despite the generous use of a laugh track device.

Nearly all of the regular female members in the cast are bossy and strident, and a few are pugnacious. Nearly all of the regular males are wimps, and with too much time on their hands, engage in various capers you'd expect from bored 12-year-old boys.

Yet this series ran for about 37 years.

"Keeping Up Appearances" features Hyacinth Bucket (pronounce it "bouquet" according to her but not according to her husband) who desperately tries to reach the Upper Crust of society. The actress is brilliant yet maddening. Sometimes you want to throttle her. Her role is well-supported by her long-suffering spouse, slovenly brother-in-law, and others.

This series ran for about six years.

Who can figure.

LOL!

I myself got a kick out of "Last of the Summer Wine", Keeping Up Appearances", and my favourite being "Are You Being Served".

Surprisingly, I too liked "Wine," not because of its humor but because wife and I had just taken early retirement (1997) and I wondered if I'd end up like those three old fools who wander the countryside and which of my buddies would be the other two to accompany me.

The other two shows were great.

By the way, Robert Fyfe the ultra wimp who played Pearl's husband "Howard," is still with us. Born in1925. Maybe the meek do inherit the Earth and live long lives. :)

My favorite British comedy is "As Time Goes By". We have it on DVD and watch the series probably once a year. For some reason, I never cared much for slapstick type comedy though.

"Open All Hours" and its sequel are two more in which I cannot see humor in most of their dialogue. However, I get a kick from Arkwright's, and later Glanville's' tightfistedness with money.
