Brits, What is Brown Sauce?

I have been going to UK for years staying in B&B's and there is always 'brown sauce' at breakfast. I have never looked at a label to see what it is. It looks like a catsup based product, but having a 'brown sauce' for breakfast doesn't appeal to me. But hey, maybe I would like it if I took a look.

So, what is it --- and it sure seems to be everywhere.

I looked on Wiki, It seems a cross between a tomato ketchup w/ the tomato and vinegar, and a BBQ sauce w/ sugar, molasses etc.

The use in tamarind is also used in Lea and Perrins Worstershire sauce, so maybe a trio of all 3?

Wiki-Tomato base, blended with malt vinegar and spirit vinegar, sugars (molasses, glucose-fructose syrup, sugar), dates, cornflour, rye flour, salt, spices and tamarind.[SUP][4][/SUP]

It sounds very good to me, especially with dates in it. I think I will buy some. I did ok with the Marmite, Holly's favorite :playful:
 
I love A-1 sauce. I put it in and on meat loaf and it's especially good in Hamburgers. My Mom used Kitchen Bouquet browning sauce. She always put it on a pot roast before cooking. I'm not sure if it's the same as brown sauce.

Oh no Lea & Perrins Worcester sauce doesn't taste like brown sauce at all..different consistency as well...

The Worcester sauce is used in cooking as well as a little dash on something like cheese on toast..

the brown sauce is the same consistency as tomato ketchup, but darker and spicier, and is never used in cooking..only as a condiment..

Although popular , Brown sauce lags far behind tomato ketchup in popularity...
 
I don't think Lea and Perrins makes A-! Sauce. Thought it was Kraft, but maybe earlier.

They make Worcestershire Sauce. Why do they say"Worcester" Sauce when that is not what's on the label :confused:

Well probably because it's made in the city of Worcester in the county of what used to be Worcestershire... which was later merged with the neighbouring county of Herefordshire, to make a double barrelled county name of Hereford & Worcester ( ask terry, it's made in a factory close to where he lives) :D

More to the point...can you pronounce it properly..most non Brits and even some Brits can't... :D

we pronounce it Wuster!! and Wustershe [cut off ]
 
Nothing like brown sauce on a proper full English breakfast....whether it is HP brown sauce or Daddies brown sauce.:D
