Will someone explain to me, what the heck is tofu and what does it taste like?

We eat tofu (made from mashed soybeans into a solid/semi/solid block). It can be fried but is best added to other dishes where it will soak up the flavours in the sauce - like a curry. By itself, it has little flavour.

A couple of curries with tofu in them in Thailand.

When we visit the US I like to eat at Mongolian BBQ. If you haven't eaten there, you choose the ingredients you want and the sauce and it is stir fried for you. Two of the ingredient I choose (which some people find weird) is tofu and polish sausage. They are baffled because they think nobody eats tofu unless they are vegetarian. People that don't like it have either never tasted it or never tasted it when properly cooked.

Taste is not a problem... but some folks do have a problem with the consistency of Tofu... It's kind of like thick pudding.

It needs to either be very firm tofu, or tofu that has had most of the moisture removed first. You can also dry fry it. It should also be cut in fairly thin pieces. Although at one of our favourite restaurants it's cubed but has a good consistency. Maybe they fry it first.

I can only get firm tofu in my store, so I get most of the moisture out by putting it between two cutting boards with lots of paper towels, and a heavy book on top. Then I cut it in thin triangles and dry fry it. Then let it marinate in curry sauce.

I get the extra firm and press the water out using plates with weights placed on top, and of course lots of paper towels. Makes it more palatable.

I prefer it sauteed in thin slabs or strips with garlic and ginger, with onions, zuchinni and brown rice and soy sauce. Quite delicious. Also like good quality tofu raw crumbled in a salad. We used to be able to get it at the health food store in bulk, but it seems to be all packaged these days.

That sounds yummy! I've had tofu scramble before but never made it myself.

I don't like tofu at all. The consistency is very off-putting.

Its a very good source of protein. Years and years ago when I was a very hungry young vegetarian, we went to chinatown for dinner and there we first tried tofu, something we'd never heard of and we loved it. It is really something that needs preparation and flavouring, especially if your used to meat but not everyone's cup of tea.
