Buffalo nickel, where are you?

I found it and I lost it… On a recent drive to Wichita (Kansas) to pick up a friend from the airport, I stopped at a cute new coffee shop. As I paid the young cashier, I nearly gave her the nickel in the picture. I kept it, paid my tab and proceeded to show her what I’d nearly paid with. She had no clue about its specialness… sorry, it was rather funny. I took this picture after I was back in my car, and sent to my youngest daughter. She used to be quite the coin collector.

So, in the car I decided to put the nickle in the outside zipper compartment of my wallet where it would be safe. Now, let me tell you, I stopped using that compartment ages back, opting for a little coin purse instead, because the zipper would often come open and coins fall out. But, in my never-ending wisdom, I figured, well, one coin surely won’t fall out.

Before getting to the airport, I stopped at Costco (paid with a card), Trader Joe’s (paid with a card) and a German restaurant (paid with paper cash). Much later, after returning home I went to retrieve the nickel… lo and behold, it was gone. I looked everywhere. Tore my purse apart, went to the car and dug around… nope, gone.

Losing it made me so upset… not so much from the $.05 value of the coin (no date left on it so surely not worth the $6M that others have sold for), but for my stupidity in putting it in that zipper compartment.

The moral of the story is… don’t be a dummy by using something you know has flaws. I’m hopeful by writing and sharing this little story that I will be able to “let it go”, as they say. :)
