I know Summer is in full swing when the Cicada's (katydids) and the Preying Mantis arrive. After sundown, our forest is filled with the Cicada's buzzing. On a mild night, we like to open the windows, and their "drone" is quite relaxing for a good nights sleep. So far, it's been too hot to enjoy that little treat. The Praying Mantis are appearing on our decks, and they do a great job of keeping the ants and flies under control. The ones we get are only about 2 inches long, unlike the huge ones I saw, years ago, in Thailand. Over there, those bugs looked like a skinny banana with wings.
On the flip side, ticks and chiggers are also an issue this time of year. I stocked up on Deet insect repellant a few weeks ago, and I spray myself liberally every time I venture out into the yard or forest. At least with this hot dry weather, there aren't any pools of standing water in the creek, so the mosquitoes haven't been a problem.
