C130 Bows out

The fly passed over the palace yesterday was the last official mission for the RAF's C130 the Hercules arguably the most versatile aircraft the RAF was ever used
What will they replace it with ? RCAF is still flying them, plus the C5 Starlifter. JimB.

I have ridden in them many times, especially in the Middle East. Sitting in those webbed seats is not luxury by any means, but they will get you there. Crossing the Atlantic is a real treat, be sure to take a sack lunch.

They are one heavy aircraft. You can feel the thrust from the engines as they begin to lift off the runway. I believe that Lockheed is still building this plane.

I was on a Shackleton squadron at the time; 4 engine heavy, based on the Lancaster. With four Spitfire engines Griffons not Merlin's each driving 2x3 bladed Contra rotating props the Hercules sounded like the inside of a Chapel to us and was as smooth as glass

Years ago, working in Oxfordshire not far from RAF Brize Norton, seeing a C130 was a sight to behold.

I remember seeing these fly in Vietnam. You could recognize them by their sound.

In the late 80's I lived outside Merced Calif, next to Castle
Air Force Base....there I witnessed and heard these giants, and
others coming in to land or taking off, landing they were only
about 500ft from my home, so I could literally see the crew, used to wave at them, they waved back!!! At nite tho they would taxi those monsters out on the runways/aprons to test
the motors, boy that woke me many a nite.....sure glad we got
them tho..!!(y)
