California wildfires?

Is everybody ok out there? I read that there have been evacuations and fear of power outages.

I'm in NM and we've got wildfires, too. Some evacuations also, but I hear this morning that they have the biggest one mostly contained. It's still a few miles from the major population centers, but some of the folks in smaller towns have had to leave and centers have been set up for people to leave their animals until they can all go back home.

Scary -- and our present heat and dryness doesn't help.

If the wildfires are starting this early, the rest of the year might bring some really major fires. The lack of precipitation in many of the Western states...for years...is creating a scenario that could be of record proportions.

My mother finally moved two years ago from So. Cal. after having to evacuation one too many times. The fires came too close for comfort. Moved back East. Still have a sister out in the same area and I'm checking with her.

Fires are about 25 miles away, on the other side of the San Gabriel mountains. A lot of smoke our way on Monday, I think that they have these 2 fires under control, basically.

Our house burned in a wild fire out in Chatsworth,Ca. back in fall of 1967. High winds, dry hillsides, some teenagers reportedly playing with matches...28 homes destroyed.

I can't help but no believe there is a human element to many of these fires. Drought/dry doesn't help but how much catastrophic lighting comes out of a clear blue sky.

Sadly I saw a couple lost their lives late this week from the fires.

Would something as simple as a chain link fence help stop burning debris or are airborne ambers the big offender. The last time I was near a forest fire I only had to deal with smoke and stench which was bad enough.

Best wishes to all affected.

All the fires except one are to the south of me. It seems we usually get them in July and especially August around here. They'll pop up in the foothills/mountains and we'll have grass fires in the valley. The smoke seems to like to settle in the North Valley, it can be a booger at times.

Smelling smoke today, always a bit worrisome. also seeing smoke, probably from the San Gabriel Complex fires. I don't know if chain link would help stop embers, depends on how strong the wind is, and how far around your house the brush is cleared. We have a good 100+ ft. of clearing around the house; I have my long sleeve work shirt on, shortly will be raking up the dried pine needles in the front yard.
