Called 911 and the firemen just left

Thank God I was home when this happened.
Just got back from mass and heated up some soup.
Sitting at the kitchen table we heard a POP and the lights flickered.
To make a story shorter some electrical components shorted and were flaming under my gas cook top.
The stove top was humming with an electrical shorting sound.
My wife called 911 because of the gas lines. I went to the panel box and shut off the circuit breaker to the kitchen.
Firemen came. Checked it all out. Checked for gas leaks. All good.
Turned the electric back on and sure enough it was shorting again.
So we disconnect the stove top so I could turn the breaker back on because my fridge and freezer were on that breaker too.
All good now. Has that electric burning smell.
This could have happened any time. Again thank God I was here.
Funny thing is, I could replace everything if my house burned down.. except my dog.
And that folks, the thought of losing my dog brings me to tears.
Looking for a new gas cook top tomorrow.

Thank you all so much for your concerns.
Again, that could have happened anytime since the stove top was OFF.
We all have this fear of your house on fire when you are gone.
I was surprised on how fast the fire truck got here. I have a rural address and the fire station is in town.

Thanking God that you are all safe! And I’ll just bet He forgives you for breaking Lenten pledge😉. In fact you probably got extra credit points for attending church. For sure we can’t replace our 4 legged family. What kind of dog do you have?? Again...so grateful you are all ok💕
I have a standard Dachshund. Most Doxies you see are those small mini's.
He's a long hair and really mellow. He is with us all the time. Good watch dog.
He's on the floor in front of me now.

I was checking on gas top replacements. Saw a couple on line that I liked but I need to check them out before I order one.
The appliance store is about an hour drive down the interstate. I want to get there and back today before the snow hits late this afternoon. They ain't cheap!

How horrifying......Thank GOD you're all safe.
Everything is replaceable.......except your little family guy......so happy you're all together after scare and almost a nitemare.
Hope you never have to face this ever again.
Keep safe.
Sorry.... i have a great dislike for natural gas.

Thank you.
However, it was electrical in nature.
I was afraid that since there was a gas line present it could have been worse.

My house still has that burnt electric smell hanging around.

It's extra scary that the circuit breaker didn't shut itself off, I'm pretty sure they are supposed to flip themselves -- when my horse water trough heater shorted it blew (is that the right word?) the breaker, also when the septic pump shorted outside several feet down in a septic tank, the sign there was a problem was my dishwasher wouldn't turn on because the breaker had blown.
Might be worth having an electrician analyze your electric stuff to see if there can be some safety mechanism added.

And I would want to make sure that is was the cooktop that was faulty and not the wiring to it. If it were I, I think I'd have an electrician look at the wiring to the cooktop.

Circuit breakers have different resistance levels.
One breaker my trip at one load and another won't.
Circuit breakers are made for different amperages.
If a short happens on one side of a transformer it would have little effect.
