My building management are giving me a very bad time over this infestation which I have had for several weeks.
They say they are not bugs but cannot say what they are
Pest inspection came today and gave me a hard time about what I say damage has been done to clothing furniture etc.
They could not identify them either.

If I could pin them down with a name and description of their habits it could help me take it further
I have several pics of them and the yuck they make but here they are in their adult stage
Thanks for any input

Not funny when I had to throw out clothes, cushions etc
If you don’t have any other photos, the white thing in this picture really looks like a feather from a feather pillow. I’m sorry you had to go through something like that, it sounds awful.

Back in my hometown, when we think there might be fleas or something in our clothes or bedding that causes allergies, we usually wait for a nice sunny day, wash everything again, and hang the clothes and blankets outside to dry. We also air out our blankets regularly when the weather is good.

But considering you’re in Canada, that’s obviously not a very practical option.

AI Overview

The image shows two small white feathers.

  • Feathers are complex epidermal growths that form the outer covering, or plumage, of birds.

  • The feathers in the image appear to be downy or plumulaceous feathers, which have loose, fluffy barbs.

  • They are naturally molted by birds and can be used for crafting or as signs of a loved one.

  • Proper feather growth and development require specific amino acids in a bird's diet.

These small white items are feathers, specifically down feathers or small body contour feathers. They are likely from a domestic bird such as a chicken, duck, goose, or parrot.

Feather Identification
  • Type: The feathers appear soft, fluffy, and lack a prominent central quill (rachis), which is characteristic of down feathers or the fluffy base of a contour feather.
  • Function: Down feathers are primarily for insulation, trapping air close to the bird's body to keep it warm.
  • Source: They could be naturally molted feathers or from a product like a down pillow, comforter, or jacket. Given that the visual search results link to discussions about feathers found indoors or from pets, they are likely from a pet bird or an item in your home.

I’ve never seen anything like that.

It seems odd that the pest inspection folks weren’t able to identify them.

Any thoughts on where they came from?
I woke up one morning to see one crawling across my rug. Then another later so I pulled out my furniture , bed , dresser etc and there they were all in a huddle right in the corner near the window . Fortunately my bed was far enough away so I sprayed with everything I had for kitchen and bathroom, wiped with paper towels and dumped them in garbage chute to the dumpster on ground outside.

Unfortunately some were already wandering and it has been one big cleaning job for me for weeks.
I only went to management when I saw one in elevator, then the hallway, then the laundry room so reported it then when I realized it was a building problem but they are totally ignoring that.

I read sonewhere in my travels through the net that they can be brought in with inddor plants.
I don't have any . Mine are all fake.

I was hoping we might have had a member who was perhaps in the pest control business
so that I could hit the management with it but early days yet.
I have researched many time but cannot come up with a firm answer.
Must go get some dinner before I collapse

fly feathers ?

The adults left a trail of white dots which embedded wherever they travelled be it the rug, a cushion, clothing and the floor
which of course I vacuumed up. If on the floor too long they embedded into the wood and had to be scraped out.
Eventually what seems to be their head appears but all attempts to pull out were useless so I just hit them with vinegar.

They also embedded in clothing where seams were and at joints and wove their way along it. Just like stitching. I picked many of them out that way in some of my clothing but mostly just tossed it out.

I know, the whole thing is unbelievable but trust me it did and is still happening though I am more aware of their behaviour now and can act accordingly.

Of course now I am looking for another place to live which at my age is a huge task.

I have had enough of this today so signing off

Thanks all for input.
