Can't Afford Surgery And Things Get Worse?

There is a 50+ lady, who lives a couple of apartments down from us who is like that. She has told me that she needs surgery on her hip, but keeps putting it off. She walks with a cane. I think part of the reason is because it will interrupt her work and she can't afford that or perhaps even the surgery.

For my hip replacement, I was on Medical Leave for 6 weeks. Was able to get full pay from my PTO and Sick Pay. For my RC surgery, I was on Medical Leave for 7 weeks, but only had enough PTO and Sick Pay to get paid for 6 weeks. When it came up to my Yearly Review, after my Medical Leave for RC surgery, I thought I'd get a promotion to Jr. Buyer. That didn't happen and I was told by my Director/Supervisor that I had taken to much time off to be promoted.

Have you ever been in a situation where you needed surgery, but for two reasons, you keep putting it off? One reason is/was being out of work for a time. Other reason, cost.

Cost was a factor in an operation you were supposed to get 3 hours to 3 days after injury. I got mine weeks/month later after I took time to assembled the money for the operation.

I know someone with the same injury had their operation at the 3 day mark and their whole recovery time table is moved up. The early surgery made for quicker early healing and earlier rehab.

Setting injury aside I had times at various jobs where I didn't want to take a vacation period fearing what would or wouldn't be there upon return, even with benefits. I used FMLA sparingly.

As far as the hip surgery if she can do any pt at all I would do it just for time. I read that there really is no such thing as a bad or weak hip but a hip joint affected/worn out by weak surrounding tissue ie the muslce, tendons and ligaments. Poor fitness leads to compensation or unnecessary stress on the joint. Sometimes rehab can help, perhaps not cure but help. My doc told me either way with surgery or without you still need to do pt so I look at it that way.
