Car Repair Costs

Anyone familiar with the cost of auto repairs? I took my 2002 Honda Civic to a local garage yesterday and incurred these charges and I wanted to know if they seemed reasonable:

PARTS
cabin air filter - $39.74
engine air filter - $19.00
refrigerant - $6.24

LABOR
replace cabin and engine air filters - $19.78
AC system diagnostic - $79.95

total for parts and labor - $164.71
tax - $11.53

balance due - $176.24

The mechanic also said that I have broken right front lower arm bushing, the right front and rear sway bar ends should be replaced and the rear brake drums should be inspected (which he was reluctant to do as it might be a "can of worms"). He is supposed to call me with an estimate for that work. What do you think it will amount to?

Googled this [2002 Honda Civic right front lower arm bushing] part cost anywhere from $30.00 to $57.00

Rear brakes

The average cost for a Honda Civic Hybrid Brake Pad Replacement is between $153 and $212. Labor costs are estimated between $96 and $123 while parts are priced between $57 and $89.

If you can't do it your self especially the control arm & brakes then paying for professional repair is like anything else. You pay the mark up on parts and what ever the labor rate is. There is a labor rate manual that explains how long a repair should take.

That cabin air filter can be tough to get at so all in all the only real savings you might get is replacing the engine air filter. For the few $ that will take in the overall list you might as well suck it up and figure on shelling out around $500.00 for what you can't do yourself.

You can always check RockAuto http://www.rockauto.com/ and see what the parts cost. Have used them often and the website is easy to use. My mechanic lets me order the parts and bring them in. Their product quality varies from factory original to aftermarket quality.

Buying parts online can be a real money saver, you are lucky to have a mechanic that will put the parts on you supply. I buy new vehicles with the 10 year warranty so I don't have to make repairs myself anymore. That doesn't mean I don't help my neighbors or my sons.

There is a certain satisfaction in helping that I doubt I'll ever give up.

Rockauto is great. I've bought several items from them over the years, and always had good results...at half the price most parts stores charge. At a minimum, a person can check parts prices there, and get a good idea of how much a repair shop is marking the price up.
