Noticed recently when watching British TV series, at the moment "Informer"..many times see drivers, sometimes Police, not wearing seatbelts. Is it not compulsory in the UK to wear a seatbelt?
It is compulsory here in Australia: The no seatbelt fine, for example, is one we all understand and even agree with, and it will set you back $325.00 (and three demerits) but did you realise it jumps to $1,372.00 if you have four or more unrestrained passengers (and six demerits)
Do other countries also not have compusory seat belt laws??

I've been pulled over for not wearing a seat belt a few times and here it's a $25.00 ticket and if they catch you more than three times in a twelve month period not wearing it they pull your drivers license for six months......I've started getting pretty good about buckling up but I still hate wearing the damn thing.

Bet you would`nt (hate it) if involved in a crash??

New Hampshire is the only US state that does not require adults to use seatbelts. Interestingly, their license plates are imprinted with their state motto, "Live free or die". They appear to take it literally.

I've been religious about wearing a seatbelt since the 70s and would feel quite naked (in a bad way) without one.

That's true but if I want to take the chance of possibly sailing through the windshield it should be my prerogative, it seems to me that there are just too many laws that are supposed to protect me from me, let me decide what's best for me.....like I said earlier, I am getting a lot better at buckling up.

I am however a firm believer in buckling in kids or even pets for that matter and I definitely would if I had either.

For anyone who feel that it's uncomfortable to wear seat belts, particularly in the rear of the car maybe this British safety advert will help you change your mind.. ( graphic warning)

I can't imagine choosing to live any other way.

ETA, I've worn seat belts religiously since they were introduced in the 1960s. My choice.

It really is isn't it Starsong?...it's an old advert now, but I wish they would rerun it on tv, there's still too many driving without seatbelts on in the rear , and I feel sure if they were reminded of this it would make a huge difference.

Yes it would. It might even even go further in reminding people to follow other safety rules better, like the speed limits, tailgating etc.

Seatbelts required in Kansas and some specific laws about seat belt use and specific requirements for children under the age of 13 to be buckled in back seat, in rear facing car seats or booster seats(older children).

Hate it? Used to be when going to a junk yard to get a part for a car because it was cheaper. The cars with holes in the windshield were always the ones that people weren't wearing seat belts. Rarely seen now but there still are people that take a chance.

When a pilot program was tried out with school bus seatbelts, kids were bashing each other with the buckles. School bus drivers are distracted enough without turning them into seatbelt monitors.

Imagine the scenario when the youngest kids are unable to work their buckles. Now the drivers not only would have to get up and assist the little ones at every stop, they literally would literally have has hands on/in those kids' laps.

.

If you crashed into someone who wasn't wearing a seatbelt and got killed because he wasn't, and you got charged with negligent homicide, how would you feel?

Good grief! I never thought of these things.

Seatbelt laws also protect the public coffers somewhat. Injuries tend to be far less serious, so the injured don't wind up exhausting their insurance coverage and assets. When they do, guess who picks up the tab?

When you sail through the windshield someone else has to pick up the pieces.

I understand about what you are saying, "live free or die" but there are certain instances where your actions impact others.

i was opposed to seat belts initially till I was hit from behind and spun into a ditch. I was lucky that I was wearing a seat belt.

Sometimes you have to be convinced to what is good for you.

Eat your vegetables. Remember that?
