Chaperones for ladies at hospital

I always ask for another woman to be present if being examined by a male doctor if any clothing needs to be removed. I went to hospital with a suspected chest infection and the male doctor seemed surprised when I asked for a nurse to be present.

Surely it is a good rule to protect both parties? There have been cases in the papers over the years where things did happen. All completely preventable by a bit of thought? I remember a couple of times when I needed an urgent very intimate examination from my male GP as the lady one was in holiday. I simply made sure the female receptionist came in for those few moments. Also for breast examination there was a female nurse present each time anyway.

So ladies, do you do this? Also, do you automatically ask for a lady doctor for certain types of examination?

I had a female dr in Fresno and was very comfortable with her.
Here my Dr is an older male..he hasn’t asked me to undress and if he did I’m sure he’d be calling a female staffer in, he’s very prudish by the book kind of dr.

Many drs lately have scribes....people with them who take visit notes...most I have met are female. I have always been comfortable around my male docs. I had one years ago I did not care for...poor bedside manner, always seemed to talk down to me. I switched for that reason

No. I'm used to being examined in private by male doctors.

A few years ago I asked a male doctor to check a female problem I had. He kind of cringed and said the woman doctor usually did that. Well, the woman doctor worked just 2 afternoons a month, and I wasn't going to wait. Come on Buddy, do your job.

I had to have a female doctor examine my privates because of a problem I was having, slightly embarrasing for me.
Not a doctor but on a couple of occasions I have been "handled" by female nurses.

I was not at ease at first, but then it didn't seem to matter. The ladies were always very professional and friendly. I once apologized to one of the ladies for her having to do it, she just laughed and said it may not be very dignified, but its just medical procedure, like any other.

No. Doesn’t bother me.

Sure, there are very, very rare cases of reported misappropriate conduct. I think doctors have someone else in the room for their own protection.

Every doctor in my area has a sign in his/her examination room stating that if one feels more comfortable having another staff member present, not to hesitate to ask for one.

I went to the ER for a swollen testicle. I was told "We only have one right now, it's a female"

I replied "Is she a certified scanner operator?"

"Yes, she is"

"Good enough"

She was very professional from beginning to end and thanked me for not being picky.

"Miss" I said "I'm in too much pain to be picky"

I have had Orthodox Jewish doctors who refuse to touch a woman, and will examine by conversation only. Never went back. I had one who gave me an injection then yelled at me to quickly cover the site of it---it was stomach.
OMG. But they were orthodox, I obviously must take it into account.
Here Muslim nurses often refuse to deal with private parts of men.

There is a Jewish female urologist at the urology doctor's office where I am. She is also a rabbi of a liberal Jewish community. I wasn't examined by her yet but I wouldn't care in the least.

That doesn't sound at all acceptable.
