Characters in TV Westerns Never Changed Their Clothes

Although I've read all the reasons why the Cartwrights and other reoccurring characters in television westerns never changed their clothing, it always seemed so stupid to me. At least, when I was younger. I thought that the people who made the shows thought we were stupid, and couldn't remember which one was Joe, Adam, Hoss, and Ben, so they had to always wear the same clothing.

Years ago, some actor on a TV western claimed he had 6 sets of clothing for his character. Needless to say, they were all identical. Hoss would go and wash up, and I would think, "Gee, maybe he'll finally change his clothing." Nope. He came back wearing the same clothes.

He didn't get a haircut, either.

Guess you had to be careful back then and have a distinct look so towns people knew were the good and bad guys.
They had to keep that same horse too, no turning it in every 2-3 years for a new model.
