......due to the novel coronavirus and its surrounding panic.

While traveling, Chinese tourists spend about $258 billion a year according to the World Tourism Organization. But now, with strict travel guidelines in place, income from tourism has been fractioned.

It not just low Chinese tourism, people all over are nervous about going to Chinese restaurants or ordering delivery.

Are you avoiding eating at Chinese places near you?

Interesting you should ask. I was just going over the precautions I'll take when I go get my half gallon of soy sauce at the 99 Ranch in my neighborhood, tomorrow.

I am careful to say, here, that I am not prejudiced against any race, ethnicity, etc. However, at 99 Ranch, the odds are far greater (than at a non-specialty grocer) that a customer may have returned from China, recently, and so I must err on the side of caution.

I will wear gloves, a mask and eye protection. The last time I visited, about two weeks ago, I was not alone in wearing protective gear.

As the world turns.........

@Bonnie and @treeguy64 , I was also feeling nervous about ordering take out last week, so I did not. I felt bad when I began to realize how our Chinese food businesses will suffer.

Bonnie, it sounds like Houston is ok. I'm glad you'll take precautions, Treeguy.

I visited a friend in the hospital yesterday. It was rather amusing that several Asian people were wearing masks, but no white or Hispanic people were. And when a Chinese woman got on the elevator, she got weird looks from the other 4 people. I chuckled & so did she.
I was tempted to say, "You're all worried about her, but I'm the one with Corona Virus."
And those masks? They're absolutely useless as far as protection, but they're OK for pacifying the scared.

yes our local Chinese restaurants are suffering from lack of custom at the moment, especially since January was the Chinese new years and so many of the restaurants close for a couple of weeks every year while the proprietors take their holidays back in China...

One local restaurant has taken the decision to close their restaurant and stay indoors for 2 weeks, to ensure themselves but mainly their customers they're not infected..

Just be careful.
I read that Corona Viruses love Soy Sauce & they put it on everything.

Well, I don't go out to restaurants these days but am thinking of getting some Chinese delivered...erm well, maybe I'll wait awhile..they say that the Coronavirus is not any worse than the flu we have going around here that kills 10,000 people every year..I don't have the statistics on who is dying of the Coronavirus or flu here but I'm willing to guess it's those with impaired immune function and in poor health..could be wrong tho of course.

Hey, Tree Guy. Dave and I go to several Asian markets around Austin -- our fave being MT Market on North Lamar. Never heard of 99 Ranch, but we'll certainly look into it. We buy our soy sauce by the half gallon, too. Hadn't even thought of staying away from Chinese food, to be honest.

We just went to a Chinese joint the other day and were discussing this. Yes, business is way down. People are afraid that some of the help may have visited China recently, or have relatives that have come over. We have one particular place here that employs newer immigrants. It makes that place particularly 'scary'. And yes, we probably will avoid at this point making things worse for them.

Panda Express is safe.....no Asians anywhere near that place.
The most popular Chinese food restaurants in my area, have Asian servers and Hispanic cooks! We stopped going to one of them when I almost tripped over a 50 lb bag of MSG in the back hallway.
