I’ve always been fascinated by this distinction.
Our chronological age is time based and unchangeable. It’s the factual measure of years, months, days that we’ve lived. Birthdays are a measure of it. We use it to determine when we can drive, drink, marry, get social security.
Biological age is entirely different. It’s functional and can vary. It’s based on our cells, organs and organ systems, tissue. By its very nature it’s dynamic and can be reversed or accelerated by lifestyle changes like diet, exercise, environment, stress, sleep.
Those of us with the same chronological age can have different biological ages and can be younger or older than our chronological age, and with various lifestyle changes can actively lower our biological age.
Biological age is calculated by analyzing various biomarkers such as blood tests and physical fitness, organs, and cognitive function. There are even tests on the market that measure bio age though I’m not sure how accurate they are.
I’m 73…or will be next month
According to a couple different sources, my bio age is 68 or 66 which is gratifying, though neither source is highly accurate….The EGYM at my YMCA and an online test I took for fun! But even so the results weren’t very far apart so I feel like I can at least state that my bio age is younger than my chronological age!
