Chuck Yeager, pilot who broke the sound barrier, dies at 97

US Air Force officer and test pilot Chuck Yeager, known as "the fastest man alive," has died at the age of 97.
Yeager broke the sound barrier when he tested the X-1 in October 1947, although the feat was not announced to the public until 1948.

I was so honored to meet hi in Ruidoso, , but I didn't know who he was. I was talking with him and found him so interesting and such a gentleman. i asked his name. he said "Chuck Yeager." I giggled a little but his expression didn't change. So I said, "You mean THEE Chuck Yeager?" "The famous test pilot?"
His expression didn't change. He quietly said "Yes".
I told him it was an honor and shook his hand. That was it! When i saw his picture on the TV tonight, "Oh Yeah! That's the same man!"

Oh, just passed this day....I was under the impression that he'd died several years ago, perhaps some other well known test pilot then.

I grew up reading of his exploits and of his service to our country....An amazing man and life.

I once heard from a pilot friend that he was the author of the saying “ There are old pilots and there are bold pilots, but there are no old, bold pilots.” Awesome career.
