We still get, on cable once in a while, "Are you being served?" (I know, totally inappropriate these days)Rutland Weekend Television
English humor, for the most part, doesn't play too well over here. Our PBS stations carry English programming, but the 'regular' channels do not (as far as I know). There is a limited audience for English programming (Downton being the great exception). Monty Python had a definite following, but still nothing like American programs. "Rumpole" and "Are you being served?" got wife and I hooked on Brit telly. And playing along BBC2 ‘ closed down’to allow them to broadcast .All thirteen episodes are on You tube.Including the Christmas special.Spawned the Rutles.Wonder if this humour crosses the pond?...."..
We had a comedy in the seventies called‘Love Thy Neighbour’ which was downright racist. It was quite popular at the time. It’s impossible to repeat it and no one would dream of making it today. They are all on you tube though.’Mind your Language’ was another with questionable credentials featuring a group of immigrants learning English.English humor, for the most part, doesn't play too well over here. yes but not only were they racist, they simply wern't funny.. and I don't mean because they used the racist card for the comedic factor, I mean simply that the writing was awful.. and if you watch them now, it's embarassing to see how bad they were..We had a comedy in the seventies called‘Love Thy Neighbour’ which was downright racist. It was quite popular at the time. It’s impossible to repeat it and no one would dream of making it today. They are all on you tube though.’Mind your Language’ was another with questionable credentials featuring a group of immigrants learning English.
