College basket players allegedly caught betting on games they played in

Players and staff betting on their own sport or teams probably more common than this one incident. A game is not just a game anymore especially with all the side bets not based on outcome.

One of my ‘60s high school basketball teammates was approached by a well known mobster and offered cash to throw a playoff game by missing shots, committing early fouls to have to sit and eventually fouling out.

He rejected the offer, reported the incident to the coach who in turn notified the police. The detective interviewed the player with his dad present and determined it as a ‘he said she said’ type of incident and nothing became of it.

My teammate had one of his best games and was respected by all.

Not really surprised. Students have been illegally paid recruitment money time out of mind. NIL was supposed to help legalize athlete compensation (and revenue sharing is in the works), but for some people, there's never enough. Regardless of how schools make payment systems above board, there will still be backroom deals and throwing games.
