LONGMONT, Colo. (AP) — National Guard troops used specialized vehicles with tank-like treads to rescue stranded drivers in Colorado in the wake of a massive late-winter storm that unleashed heavy rain and snow on parts of the Midwest plains early Thursday.

"This is a very epic cyclone," said Greg Carbin, chief of forecast operations for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Weather Prediction Center. "We're looking at something that will go down in the history books."

Wishes for safety for anyone in this storm.

I spoke to my Sister, in Arvada, Co., a suburb on the West side of Denver, an hour ago, and she said the city is a mess. Yesterday, during the peak of this storm, the city came to a standstill, and the streets/highways were almost impassable. She said the winds have blown snow into drifts 3 or 4 foot high along the sides of the houses, etc....they will probably spend much of today/tomorrow digging out. Power outages, due to trees hitting the power lines, have put thousands without electricity. Locally, here in the middle of Missouri, we're just dealing with lots of wind, and some pretty good rains, yesterday...the bulk of the storms went North and East of us.

IIRC, SeaBreeze is in Colorado. Are you doing alright, SeaBreeze? Hope all of our members in the storm area are safe.

:praying:

Changing of the seasons always seems to bring wind if nothing else. Throw in some strong storm systems it's not a calm combination

We're thinking about all of you with friends and family enduring this awfulness over a large part of the U.S. for the last few months and sending thots of better weather to come....hang in there folks.....:winter1:

Thanks Tommy, I normally go out for my walk even during heavy snowstorms, will leave the dog at home if the weather is very frigid or the snow is too intense/deep. Well, yesterday I hunkered down and just stayed home. The winds were vicious and blustery, they were hitting in every direction blowing snow hard at you. I shoveled a shovel wide path from my front door to my mailbox (mail was never delivered), and that was to get the morning newspaper from the driveway.

An area of our back yard near the fence is pine and spruce trees, kind of like a protected tiny forest back there. My dog wouldn't go off the back porch, which had drifts on snow on it, so I did put on my parka and put a rain jacket on him and went out with him to do his business in that section that wasn't as violently windy. Of course afterwards, he was running around the drifts and wanting to play. Once I walked back to the back door, he was at my heels.

They had coverage on the TV all day long, and there were areas of Colorado that were much worse than by me, and nightmares on the highways. Told my husband that it was so nice to be retired during times like that, I would have driven to work on the highway in the morning when it was still just a freezing rain, then on the way home I may have been in a serious traffic jam with very little visibility. I saw on the news some folks lost a lot of their roof shingles and one guy lost his chimney, we were lucky to have no downed trees or property damage.

Our lights flickered a few times throughout the day, but we were lucky not to have the power go out.

I wish the best for those who are still dealing with this storm, or have it coming their way.

Thanks for the update, SB! Thankful you didn't lose power and doggy had a little romp.

People need to stay off the roads in these conditions.
