Computer totally froze up twice today

Not having a cell phone is something you have mentioned in other posts. Could be your computer knows this and was trying to help you stay away from better communication.
Good thing you weren't looking for credit cards it might not have restarted at all.
 
Really OLD operating systems like Windows 7 have a tough time navigating modern websites, with the really out-of-date browsers W7 has available.. I'm not even going to expound on how NOT SECURE it is, attempting to surf the internet with out-of-date, un-patched software. 3rd party web browsers like Chrome and Firefox will only offer backwards compatible software for so long, but their future profits are in the future, so that's where their attention is focused.

Don't fight progress, embrace it and reap the benefits.

Not a question of fighting progress, don't want to spend the money. Do not use computer for personal stuff, i.e. banking. Use only for this place and a few others like it.
 
Many websites are problematic, most often even the honest ones with no malware just have too many ads. Worse yet... far too many people use ad-blocker add-ins, which causes the site to try to get more and more clever bypassing ad blocking. In the end the web pages can end up being a very heavy burden on your machine.

I have several good ad blockers and able to block quite a bit. Even down to certain people and subjects. I won't do without them now.
 
I use Malwarebytes, Avast and Ccleaner. I have been told by a techie friend that this is sufficient. All free apps.

And as others have said; having an up to date system definitely helps.

I seem to remember WindowsXP being an absolute nightmare. Lots of problems with that.
 
Have you tried disabling hardware acceleration in browser settings? Sometimes this feature may affect certain sites:

In Edge, press Alt + F at the same time on your keyboard > Select Settings > System and performance > Under System, disable Use hardware acceleration when available

In Chrome, click Image on the top right corner of the window > Settings > System > disable Use hardware acceleration when available

In Firefox, click Image on the top right corner of the window > Settings > General > Under Performance, Uncheck the box next to Use recommended performance settings, then uncheck Use hardware acceleration when available

EDIT: If disabling hardware acceleration doesn't fix your problem, it's easy enough to re-enable it. I just figured with your older laptop and operating system, it might be something to try.
 
@debodun ... you probably don't have all three browsers ... edge, chrome, firefox ... but I don't know what you have or use and included instructions for all three. Would be interesting to know if you tried more than one browser or not though.

EDIT: Oh and I just looked at the family dollar site and clicked on a couple of the prepaid phones with no problem, but I'm using Linux and Firefox. I know that info does you no good. Sorry. Just added to say, I didn't have an issue with it.
