Considering Two Volunteer Positions

Two places I've put applications into are Second Harvest, though it's called something else now and HART, a local animal rescue group. Second Harvest because of something I saw last night. I don't know if Trader Joe's does food donation but if they don't they should. Jeez all their shiny happy grow your green community crap and a leaf bag of bread loaves on the loading dock apparently for discard. Another huge bag of muffins and bagels.

I mean really, you could feed how very many people with this stuff. A day or two past the shelve date. What a pathetic waste. HART has rescue kitties in our store. They accept volunteers to feed, change litter boxes and socialize the cats daily. There's a one-eyed ginger boy I would take in a heartbeat. Sadly Sophie became so cat crazed I can't bring home any new cats until she's gone. This way I can do a good deed and get to cuddle kitsies:D

Yup, I want to help the kitties. But crap all the humans...sourdough bread a day past shelf date? Muffins and bagels? The Danish pastries? Put them in the garbage? Hell to the no....

I know in retail food products have to be pulled from the shelf and can't be sold after their expiration date. I'm not sure if there's a law against donating, but there could be.

Fur, You need a tough hide when you first volunteer at a food bank. I know that I spent my first days running to the back for a quick cry when you see the kids and the seniors.

It takes a little time to develop that thick skin and realize that behind the desperation there is also hope. It is a rewarding job once you get past the initial shock.
