"While looking at medical records from more than 27,000 people who were all 60 to 75 years old, researchers found that those who were deficient in folate were also "68% more likely to be diagnosed with dementia," per EurekAlert!.

"Folate seems to influence cognitive function," LisaYoung, PhD, RDN and a member of the ETNT medical review board, tells Eat This, Not That!."It is crucial to the proper functioning of the nervous system and in the elderly, a deficiency may contribute to the aging brain which can elevate dementia risk."

The article goes on to warn against getting too much folate. Doing so might mask a B12 deficiency. There is a link within the article that lists the 20 foods with the highest folate content. The article also points out the distinction between folic acid and folate.

That was interesting Diva, good read, .. I've checked at the foods which contain high folate levels, and fortunately despite being a picky eater I do take enough of those foods that I should be getting enough folate for my body...

Advanced and optimal nutrition can only help stave off illness.

We sometimes get supplements from a company called Life Extension. They have been around since the 1970s. They publish a magazine about supplements and natural health. Those articles are footnoted, referencing fully professional scientific studies.

And they have an archive of old issues online, all free.

If you call them you can consult with a nutritionist on the phone. We became members. I am not sure if you have to become a member to get that service. Maybe not? But, anyway, it is very helpful.

And, you know, if you want to go a natural way or explore it, you could always consult with a Holistic MD, or an MD from Integrative Medicine, or an Osteopath...

ANYTHING a person can do to stave off Dementia is Well Worth Doing! After watching my Sister decline, over the past few years, we are Very aware of what we eat and do.

Yes, OED, good post...I read that, too..and as gonna post.

Take every day.

Hopefully, won't be taken off to the looney-bin,. too soon!šŸ˜‚

My idea of not getting dementia is walk outside and get fresh air everyday, eat healthy foods, find some interesting people to talk to and exchange ideas, keep the mind sharp reading interesting books and articles, listen to music or even better play an instrument and limit your time in front of the TV or those hours starring at smartphones. Oh yes, limit the booze and don't smoke. Perhaps my ideas aren't guaranteed but they work for me and so far so good.

Like that old Excedrin commercial said John. "When something works, that's what you use." The things you mention definitely signify healthy living.
