conversation starters? and killers?

You can start a conversation about just about anything -- usually I will comment on the venue I am at, if it's an event or a party, maybe asking about how they know the hosts, what they think of the event, etc., or maybe comment on an interesting piece of jewelry someone is wearing, the food, etc.

Good openers all, Cookie.

Killers: did you know the fully grown male elephant has to sit down when mating?
Let me tell you about my golf handicap..
Have you ever had a kidney removed?

Good openers : Isn't this party ghastly, let's go to the pub over the road ( as long as this isn't said to the hostess)
Is that your own hair, I have always wanted grey streaks, aren't you lucky!
Congratulations, when is the baby due? ( be careful with fat people though, they can take this the wrong way.)
So, what do you do? really? How can you stand it!:joke:

The best thing when meeting new people is to be quietly friendly and not OTT.Saying hello and telling them your name, and then perhaps something about where you live, who they came with etc.It all depends how formal/informal things are, the type of event.Be a listener, too many people want to talk but not listen.

I know a few conversation killers that I've been shocked to hear people use before. "How's the weather up there?" to a tall person (very rude), "Do you always limp?", and believe it or not I was in Sprouts (Sort of like a smaller Whole Foods Store) awhile back and I saw an overweight lady with a cart full of veggies and fruit who was approached by a thin, in shape, enthusiastic, loud gal who said "Have you been eating like this long?". I could tell she really embarrassed the poor woman who stumbled over a couple sentences I can't even recall and when Ms Loudmouth walked off I asked the gal with the cart of veggies "Do you know her?" and she said "I've never seen her before in my life." :(

Don't ask what your grown children do? (Maybe one is in rehab or prison). How do you come back with a comforting comment?
Why did you get a divorce?
Do you always eat that much?
I am a vegetarian.
