Copy Image & Paste in Chrome

You may find that many images posted after the migration download slowly, it's because when you do "Copy Image & Paste" in Chrome, Chrome actually copied the content of the image (not the file) and generated a new PNG file, PNG files are not meant for photos, they are very big with poor image quality.

So, when you attach a 100KB JPG file with "Copy Image & Paste" in Chrome, you actually uploaded a 500KB PNG file without your knowledge. Since I set a very big file size limit - 8MB to make sure all your uploads succeed, you won't get the file-too-large error, but it added unnecessary burden to our server without any extra benefits.

To prevent this we have banned PNG files. "Copy Image & Paste" in Chrome doesn't work here.

PNG Files Are Now Supported Again!

You can now attach PNG files to your posts. The current file size limit is 150 KB, which should be sufficient for most purposes.

Using "copy image/paste" to upload pictures is also supported. However, you should only use it for less colorful images, such as screenshots or cartoons. If you try to copy and paste a colorful jpg image, the upload will fail, as explained in the first post.

Other image types are not affected by this change.

That is great news ! Thanks @Matrix. Now I just need to figure out why I can't upload pictures from my phone when using Chrome (Android 15). I used to be able to but I haven't since Android 15 came out. I need to poke into permission settings .

You can also just drag-and-drop an image into your post. It will go wherever the cursor is.

PNG uses lossless compression, so even for a photo it is better than JPEG in theory. However the file size is generally way too large so bang for the buck is poor. Since most photos are pretty sloppy anyway, lossy JPEG compression is usually good enough even at quality levels of 60 to 75.

Standard PNG can also offer transparency (and translucency) at more than 256 colors, unlike GIF which only supports simple mask transparency for 256 or less colors. But both PNG and GIF compress better for "flat" images without fine color gradation.

So the "best" format varies based on content requirements and file size goals.

I used Png2jpg in the past. Just makes it easier now to upload screenshots from my phone without having to use the app. I know, first world problems.
