Coronavirus.... and the arctic ground squirrel

….no my friends I have not gone off the deep end from the coronavirus induced self isolation/shelter in place solitude of my apartment. However after a recent trip to the grocery store as I sat and pondered my fate a memory of something I witnessed in Denali national park while watching some grizzle bears rose to the surface.

The park is renowned for its wildlife viewing including a good number of grizzlies that call it home. What I remember thinking while watching squirrels interact with the bears was that it was akin to the carnival game 'whack-a-mole'. The squirrels would pop up out of their holes grab whatever looked like food and disappear back into their hole, making the bears run back and forth between many different holes.

So let us say the coronavirus is the grizzly and I am the squirrel, I run out for food and right back to my apartment, aka the squirrels hole. Another day I go out to get gas and do laundry and again right back home. In my thoughts I am that squirrel dashing between the possible dangers of a coronavirus infection and the relative safety of my apartment. Dark humor no doubt but if we could not find some humor in life the everyday pressure of the danger around us would no doubt stress us even more and give us a greater susceptibility to the virus.

I think humor is a great medicine for stress, and thus for not weakening our immune system. So when we have a virus that seeks out and attacks a person harder when their immune system is low all those humorous postings on Facebook are like a small boost to our immune system.

So remember it is alright
to miss a network newscast
every once in a while
and it is more than
OK to laugh
because it is helping to

keep us safe
