Cost of hotel rooms

The cost of a descent hotel room has seemed to greatly increase this year. A room I could get for $120 a night last year, including breakfast is now $160 or more. I won’t sleep in dirty or uncomfortable rooms. As I age a bad bed takes its toll in the morning.

Seems that way to me too. Particularly in the last year or two, prices seem much higher.

I remember when Motel 6 was $6 a night. Not sure you'd call that decent though. For 25 cents more you could get a key to the TV, a small black and white with 3 stations...

A point to ponder....During the height of the Covid pandemic, many hotels and motels here in Canada closed their doors due to a lack of customers. That went on for months. BUT the hotel companies still had bills to pay, like utilities, insurance, property taxes, debts to banks, and the cost of maintaining the building. For that reason, they are now trying to re-coup the previous losses. JimB.

That makes sense. The travel demand is there to support higher prices at this time.

We own a one bedroom oceanfront timeshare in Atlantic City, N.J.. After my husband passed away (and when I used to travel alone), I'd book a studio suite which has a full kitchenette (stove, refrig, dishwasher, microwave, dishes, etc.). Other amenities: on site pool, fitness room, a restaurant, cafe and free shuttle service to casinos and select spots in the city and the supermarket in Brigantine, N.J. In fall and winter it costs (not including taxes) $40 a night from Sunday - Thursday and $50 the rest of the year. $60 Friday and $70 Saturdays all year round, except Saturdays are $80 during peak season. I am rarely there on weekends unless I'm using my annual week (which is "paid for" with my annual allotted points, not $$). For a hotel rooms in Atlantic city, it costs anywhere from $108- $244 a night during the week and $320 - $509/night on Saturday night. I see that if I was not a five star owner at our home resort, the studio suite would cost $199 a night during the week and $699 on Saturday night.

Another option I have is booking through an exchange club if I want to go elsewhere, with thousands of resorts to choose from. There are plenty of discount prices to be had. This comes in handy because my preferences would be Marriotts, Hyatts, Wyndhams and resort hotels of that quality. Once my husband and I booked a three bedroom townhouse in Ocean City, MD for $179, not per night but for the week! Though still discounted, those prices have risen a bit, which means I can still pay for a week what might be the cost for one night otherwise.

Cost of Hotel Rooms Post-Pandemic. WTH! (Pardon the Bleep🙃)

Daughter and I were planning a day trip next month. We have good travel prices by bus and by train.

However, I was punched so hard, became out of breath when I saw the prices for one night in a hotel which was known for great services, pet-friendly and incredibly low prices.

Youch! Take the swords out of my body right now.... Bleep, bleep!

Seriously, an average of £499.00 for 2 adults, one bed required (at least double) and accepting our wee black kitty.

To possibly get, but not guaranteed £69.95 for one night same situation, we'd have to wait until Sunday 3 September 2023.

Yes, and I'm being polite about it, we all understand that the travel/tourist industry took a beating, thanks to the Pandemic...but seriously??? What the heck are they thinking???

We'll be back to doing a simple day trip and hoping thatour wee kitten will be okay all alone for that long. Seriously worried now about having a stress-free day way for healing and recuperation.

It might bring tears to your eyes and soul... So sad how greedy it's been. We didn't cause this Pandemic, right?

Your opinions, please?

Rental cars have increased 4-5 x’ s over the last 5 or so years. What’s with that? I used to get a Nalibu for about $18 a day. Ti say, I’m lucky to find one for less than $54-65 a day. Greed?

I would leave the pet at home. That might save some money. Pet friendly is the newest racket for charging more. Not that I blame them. Pets are a nuisance in hotels, both for the staff and the other visitors. I have never seen a pet who appreciates a new cityscape or a marvelous view in a nature area. Personally, I avoid pet friendly hotels if I can.

Hotels, Airbnbs and VRBOs have all gone up dramatically.
On a recent road trip, most of the hotels I stayed in are booked solid every night. Best to go in the off season if one can. Save money and avoid the crowd. If having to pay high prices and having to worry about little kitty or little Snoopy is a stressful issue, why bother to go?

Several years ago, I was thinking of going back to visit the area where my family vacationed when I was a child. The place where we used to stay is no longer a cottage rental place, it's a campground now. I looked at B&Bs. One said their rate was $300. I thought that was the WEEKLY rate, but looking more closely, that was the DAILY price! I wouldn't have been able to sleep knowing I was paying that much!

From my experience, B&Bs have always been pricey (and the experience overrated). However, some swore by them. Different strokes for different folks.

I remember when B&Bs and AirBnb used to be relatively cheap. A person with an extra bedroom and bath would rent it out for a few nights to travers and a fraction of the ordinary hotel rate. The home owner made some extra money, and perhaps found an interesting new friend. Now, people buy condos and homes for the purpose of renting them out and they charge high rates. Then they toss in other charges like cleaning fees, and maybe even parking fees. OUCH!

If cheap is important as with this frugal guy, then one might use Google Maps to locate low prices though it takes a bit of effort to move past their paying lodging industry clients. Cost differences are often huge but note some hotels play games adding fees Google doesn't show.

First open Google Maps in ONLY the base mode.:

https://www.google.com/maps/

Next in the Search bar enter a city plus "hotels", for example "San Francisco hotels".
That will display a map of San Francisco with lots of nightly hotel pricing flags. Note the price slider window top left. Move the maximum down to $99 that will remove higher flags on that map. Select one of the flags that changes the side bar into a listing of reservation services for that hotel. Notice the two prices shown. Recently Congress became involved in stopping the jacked fees practice so Google now shows both numbers. Be sure to read Reviews.

If you're a veteran, you can get accommodations on a base for a lot less.

Of course, not all bases have rooms to let, but many of them have RV parks. When my son, a navy veteran, travels with his RV in tow, he stays at military bases for cheap.

I've never stayed at a B & B and don't plan to. I like my privacy and they just never appealed to me. Plus when I want to get away, I go to my happy place, our timeshare in Atlantic City, N.J., where I feel comfortable and literally like I'm at my second home. This is what I get when booking a studio. Its $57 a night, except Fri & Sat when it's $68 & $80 respectively, including taxes "in season" and $46 a night during the winter months and about $11 less per night from Fri & Sat rates mentioned above. We own a one bedroom and with our annual allotment, we pay nothing for using that once a year. I don't need more than a studio when I'm alone plus I prefer studios because all of them face the Atlantic ocean and Brigantine Island. Sometimes using exchange club deals, rates can be even cheaper there and at other resorts. My only issues are that they remodeled the suites using gray tones, that seem to be in vogue these days and have walk in showers. I liked the warm wood tones better, the headboards were fancier and I don't care for walk in showers.

One week cruise to Alaska for a cheap inside room is going for around $350 CND. Miserable hotels near the cruise port want $600 CND/night. They must be joking! You can keep your hotel and your cruise port. A "FOOL" I was not born!

Anyway, for $600 CND, I can buy a lot of "Sailor Jerry" rum and have a great time right here at home. Thank you Sailor Jerry!

Not knowing the country you live in I have no way to compare.
I booked a 10 night stay at a decently appointed accommodation place overlooking a marina for AU$1655. So comparable to your price.

Also, for 25c more you could make the bed vibrate. :)
