COVID-19 Vaccine: Worth a Shot

I just received an e-mail from our U.S. Representative. A part of that email is below: ( the title above was the title at the beginning of the email and unchanged simply copied and pasted, note the area I Underlined)

I am proud of the legislation Congress passed earlier this year, which provided crucial funding that helped make these vaccines possible. Several vaccines up for emergency use authorization report an efficacy of more than 90 percent; for the FDA to approve them, they must meet rigorous safety and effectiveness standards. While this is promising, overall effectiveness will likely rely on the confidence of individuals about receiving the vaccine in order for immunity to be high enough to break the chain of transmission.

I want to hear from you. Please take a moment to complete the below survey regarding your confidence in the safety and effectiveness of a COVID-19 vaccine.

end of email, where a list I can pick from as to the level of my confidence in the vaccine.

My thoughts; I'm not sure I'm qualified to provide a level of confidence in something I have only heard about and a more scientific discipline is needed to provide a qualified response.....Your thoughts?
If approved by the FDA, how confident will you be in the safety and effectiveness of a COVID-19 vaccine?

That's one of silliest things I've read - The effectiveness of the vaccine depends on the confidence of people who receive it?

So......it's an emotional vaccine? 😂

Yeah, they should have worded that differently...relies on the number of people who receive the vaccine. But that depends on how well distributed/available the vaccine is.

No. But if you believe something will work it's more likely to. You've heard of placebo group studies? If someone genuinely believes a medicine or vaccine will make them well, it will, aided in no small part by their belief. People in placebo groups believing they are receiving real medicine can show the same positive results as those who did receive the medicine.

Well, that's wonderful because I believe I'll be well without the vaccine, so I will be. :giggle:

"People in placebo groups believing they are receiving real medicine can show the same positive results as those who did receive the medicine."

True in many cases but if one person is given the vaccine and one a placebo and both are told, now your safe from getting this virus, and both are exposed to Covid, will the virus avoid the person who received the placebo? No its a virus, it doesn't care how confident you are.

I really have a hard time believing an elected US representative ( or even his staff) would word a correspondence in such a manner. And to title it with "Covid-19 vaccine: Worth a Shot" implies to me "well it may not work but its worth a shot." Then to read..."overall effectiveness will likely rely on the confidence of individuals about receiving the vaccine in order for immunity to be high enough to break the chain of transmission.

Tells me if you think its a duck, it's a duck. It may be barking at me, but that's a duck. I guess my confidence level is vey low or non existent at this point.

No I think they worded it exactly how they meant to. I think if not enough people get it then it's not going to do any good. If you have 10,000 people and only 1,000 take it what kind of help is that going to be? You will still have 9,000 spreaders.

I meant it was a clumsy, complex sentence. If it were broken into a couple of sentences it would have been clearer.

Most of us understood the meaning nevertheless.

I’m taking the vaccine. I think all y’all nonbelievers should not. Stay home for the rest of your life. No skin off my nose.
Wow! It's not a matter of believing, it's a matter of proven safety. You have to much anger.

Pretty sure those who wish to wait have no plans of staying home the rest of their lives.

And BTW, we ALL know your going to be first in line, and good for you, that's your choice, I haven't read any posts telling you not to get the vaccine.

Yet you and others put down those who wish to wait.

Many people get reassurance in their choice when they see others make the same choice. We also see that with flu shots - some people who get a flu shot will put down others who don't get it. With all the Pandemic reporting & frustration, it will probably be even worse.

I have too much anger? Maybe I do. Anger at China for not reporting this sooner. Anger that it’s politicized beyond all belief. But I’m not angry at you. Getting the vaccine is your decision. As it will be mine. And mine is a yes. Gimme the damn vaccine!!!
