Covid - a lab leak

NOW finally they decide this is so. We all knew it must be it from the beginning. Something to do with the dreadful live meat markets in Wuhan too.

What on earth really happened?

I've heard lots of speculations, but I haven't heard that any specific first source has actually been identified.

Dr Roland Wiesendanger (University Hamburg) published this theory already in February 2021 together with a plea to stop the gain-of-function research at laboratories. I have no doubt, that this virus was modified at the Wuhan Institute. I am only asking myself if it was an accident or if this virus was released intentionally.

This report was issued with a low level of confidence wasn't it? Would that put it in the same group as a report that pin pointed patient zero as Bill Bixby who, it was assumed, contracted it after contact with Ray Walston??

It was on the news…but the news I watched said it was not a consensus of all the agencies. But lab accidents are possible. Especially if you happen tobe studying a virus that a large percentage of people will have subclinical reaction to. That alone could allow the virus to spread so far into a population as to be difficult to pinpoint origin . I twice got jobs in labs because people had managed to give themselves hepatitis disposing of hepatitis waste. It happens …accidents happen.

The world is now nearly three years, and perhaps 20 million deaths, into the Covid-19 pandemic, and we still don’t have a clear story about how it all began.
That is a very strange epistemological limbo, one that will likely continue for the foreseeable future, given the way investigations into the pandemic’s origins have been stalled and stonewalled. When The Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday that a research group within the Department of Energy had reached the conclusion that the coronavirus had most likely escaped from a Chinese lab, it was merely the latest sign of disagreement and uncertainty both inside the U.S. intelligence community and outside: There is no genuine proof, one way or the other, leaving us to apply our own prejudices and biases to a story that doesn’t quite seem to fit together.
This is not me by the way. David Wallace-Wells wrote this in the NYT today. Opinion is a good as this gets, until someone actually knows.

Lots of theories. I am skeptical of the lab leak thing for technical reasons. However I sure would like us to get a better understanding of the origin, the more we learn the better we will be able to deal with the next one. However we may never really be able to completely figure it out, not to a high degree of certainty.

Here is something interesting I read about it:

What is the lab-leak theory?

It's a suspicion that the coronavirus may have escaped, accidentally or otherwise, from a laboratory in the central Chinese city of Wuhan where the virus was first recorded.

Its supporters point to the presence of a major biological research facility in the city. The Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) has been studying coronaviruses in bats for over a decade.

The institute is a 40-minute drive from the Huanan wet market where the first cluster of infections emerged.

Those who entertain the theory say it could have leaked from a WIV lab and spread to the wet market. Most argue it would have been an unaltered virus collected from the wild, rather than engineered.

having lived in chinese communities for a number of years and found them to be helpful and polite and often generous they absolutely hate on any terms admitting they have made a mistake however small or large. Following this story from its conception I do believe there was one big blunder and it has since been covered up stretching as far as the WHO

My feeling is also that it was released intentionally.
