Criminal vandalism to a North Carolina power grid. Multiple locations hit

What an inconvenient time to do malicious devilment. I know what it's like to be without power for days in the cold weather. When Superstorm Sandy came through it was the end of October and it had already gotten quite cold. I thought I could manage but after two nights, I went to stay with my son and (future) DIL. There are too many crazy, hateful, mean spirited, destructive fools running around loose these days. It's been said before and I'm sure it won't be the last time...."I just don't know what the world is coming to!!"

One of the most vulnerable parts of our society is the electrical grid. Ice storms and other natural weather events can and do pose serious problems. Active attacks such as this one, can also inflict wide spread damage and outages. A standard anti government terrorist tactic is to attack the utility services , to cause the most disruptions. By taking out the electrical supply, many other things are affected, like water pumping stations, traffic lights, gasoline stations, grocery stores and office buildings, and schools. Targeting high tension lines, and towers was one of the tactics taught in the military text books that the US Green Berets used to teach opposition groups in south America in the 60's and 70's. This tactic may be repeated again. We will have to wait and see. JimB.

During hunting season which is now, there have been some goof-balls who take a shot at the glass insulators on power lines, just for fun since they saw no game to shoot at. It has happened here but not too often. That might be the case in N.C.
It seems they hit the transformers at ground level. Not only knocking out power but caused an oil leak that had to be dealt with. Hitting a large object at ground level might be an accident IF the transformers were behind the actual target.

This isn't just some goof-balls taking a shot at a substation because they didn't get any deer. The article states that authorities said the shooters knew exactly what they were doing and where to shoot to do the most damage. And it was at multiple locations. This is concerning.

It makes me wonder what is really behind this. Is this just a test run?

Good as a speculation.
Not a happy thought in this article

How many electrical substations are there?
There are more than 55 000 transmission substations in the United States, but an attack on less than 10 could plunge the entire nation into darkness, according to a study by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) that was obtained by the Wall Street Journal.

Attack on Nine Substations Could Take Down U.S. Grid Feds seek new rules to protect against physical attacks KATHERINE TWEED13 MAR 2014

Take note the article was in 2014. Between the substations & the national grid

Of course we don't know what the Feds came up with.

More likely home grown anti government types. Take your pick from a wide array of groups on both ends of the political spectrum. JimB
I looked to see if there's some power company pulling some dirty tricks, not reading anything touching on this, it very well could be a test run for bigger.
