Dashboard Cameras in Russia

Civilians having dashboard cameras seems odd, but American drivers seem like something out of the old west when compared to drivers in other countries.

A few months ago, a local news show examined driving policies in other countries. Iceland requires teens complete a 4 year course covering driving in adverse weather conditions and defensive driving. Their 18 year olds can handle a vehicle approximating skills developed in professional security officers.

Where our drivers eat meals, drink coffee, shave, and apply make up behind the wheel, having conversations while driving is illegal in Russia. I am not sure if that particular law is aggressively enforced, though. McDonald's drive through windows are popular enough that Russian franchises may have fought to ease the prohibition against "driving with divided attention".

I cannot vouch for the report's veracity. It sounded like a "things could be worse" story

We have seen the first inklings of dashboard cameras, for non-law enforcement drivers, as car insurance companies offer discounts for having similar devices in our cars, here. I also heard that newer vehicles have black boxes, like airplanes.

If my old transport's engine develops problems, I'll opt for a rebuild before I purchase a new vehicle with a black box!
