David Prowse aka Darth Vader, Dies

The bodybuilder, David Prowse, who played Darth Vader in some of George Lucas's Star Wars movies, has died at 85.

David Prowse wasn't the only actor to play Vader, but was the most popular. Actually, him and George Lucas had a 30 year feud going on. Lucas wanted Prowse to play the part, but not use his voice. Lucas said that he needed more of a "bass" type voice for Vader and Prowse had a high voice level. So, Lucas had James Earl Jones do all of David's lines. Prowse wasn't informed that his voice would be dubbed out and Jones voice put in. Prowse was very surprised when he heard Jones's voice, instead of his, at the Star Wars, A New Hope, Premier in 1977. Prowse argued with Lucas about the change and, later, Lucas banned Prowse from all Star Wars Conventions/Celebrations.

Anyway, I was 27 when the first Star Wars movie, A New Hope, came out. We have all movies, except Solo. Have been to Disney World Hollywood Studios in Orlando, Florida which had a Star Wars area. Also, went to Celebration 2017 at the Convention Center in Orlando.

I have a Halloween costume that looks like David Prowse just stepped out of it. Yes, it is that authentic! It cost us around $800, plus alternations and a great Lightsaber to boot. Actually, we bought the costume in April of 2015 and it was on sale of an original price of $1,500. My wife has seen me in the costume and thinks I look great.

I was never a "Treekie" of Star Trek, but there were some tv Space shows I liked, such as Battlestar Galactica with Dirk Benedict and Anne Lockhart (June Lockhart's daughter) and Lorne Greene (Bonanza fame).

From the first time, in Newport Beach, Calif., I walked inside the theater and seen this giant Star Destroyer go overhead on the screen, I was totally sold on Star Wars.

I knew I wanted a costume of Darth Vader. We also ended up getting a costume of Princess's Leia white dress and famous "hair buns" and boots for my wife. Then, after wearing the Princess Leia costume, we decided to get her a Female Storm Trooper costume, including the holster and blaster.

Was never a trekie either, but had a close friend all through school who loved Star Trek, and because of the fact I did gain a little trekie in me. :0

Just love the sounds of your wife's costumes as well!

I remember, back in 2017, I put the costume on Halloween evening and stood outside the front door of our apartment in Florida. Numerous young kids, and their parents stopped an wanted a picture of their kids standing by me. I had my $125 "Dark Side" Lightsaber, that functioned somewhat like a real Lightsaber. Walked up and down the sidewalk in front of our apartment waving to cars as they passed by coming into the complex. One Halloween evening neither of us will forget! I'll see about putting a photo on here.
